tether kit for extended cab 1993 chevy pickup

I've spent hours searching online and can't find a tether solution for my 1993 Chevy Extended cab truck. GM made a kit that has been discontinued for years and I haven't been able to find a substitute in the aftermarket. Does this mean I need rig up my own or buy a new truck??

Seats are Cosco Scenera, if that matters. One seat is forward facing for my 3 year old and the other is rear for my 1 year old. Per the directions the forward facing seat needs the tether and the rearward IS NOT.

Thanks,
Austin

Hi Austin, welcome to car-seat.org. Sorry that your question got buried here and didn't get responses right away! If this happens in the future, please feel free to bump your thread by posting in it again. :)

As for your question, one solution would be to turn your 3 year old back to rear facing, in the scenera if he/she fits, or in a different seat if not (though that could possibly involve buying a new seat).

Another solution, though not ideal (as long as you're not in Canada!**), would be to use a seat for your 3 year old that doesn't *require* a tether when forward facing (though all forward facing harnessed seats do recommend tether use if at all possible, as a general rule). Honestly, I don't know offhand if the scenera absolutely requires top tether use, or if it is just recommended, but your manual should say for sure.

**Exception - in Canada, all forward facing harnessed seats require a top tether. So not using one would be illegal if you live there, making this option a really bad idea.

Ez-on products make a tether kit for use with their harnesses. Not sure if you can use it with other manufacturers seats, though.

While EZ-On doesn't officially approve it, they do test and certify it for use up to 168 lbs so i'm comfortable using it to that combined weight with other seats.

In some cases you'll have to drill a pre drilled hole larger, but instructions are provided (and I believe we even have a thread on it somewhere with pictures.)

StanIROCZ, I'm curious whether you installed an EZ On tether anchor in your Chevy pickup? I purchased one for a 1997 Chevy extended cab but haven't installed it yet.
