Latch anchors on older car

My aunt will be picking up our twin 4 yo girls from pre-school here shortly. She has an '85 Oldsmobile where the rear seatbelts (lap only) don't allow you to pull out to ratchet/lock. My first thought was to have new seatbelts installed, but it's hard to find those.

I just learned of the LATCH system. Where can I find the LATCH anchors? And are they specific to vehicles, or are they pretty generic, only requiring adequate mounting points?

Our girls are in a forward facing 5 point seat. I assume that I can find the LATCH retro-fit straps for this?

Thanks so much!

Re: Latch anchors on older car

Hi,

Unfortunately, LATCH lower anchors cannot be retrofitted except for a few 1999 and newer Audi/VW models.

She may be able to have shoulder belts installed so your girls could use a booster safely, but she would have to contact the dealer to see. A less expensive option might be a Britax Laptop. You might read about it below in a thread from a couple days ago. It might fit your needs very well.

As long as they are within the height and weight limits, they may also use a harnessed carseat, though a locking clip may be needed if the vehicle does not have locking latchplates. Also see:

From what I understand, you should never use a ....

locking clip with a lap belt only. Don't lapbelts have locking latch plates?

That is correct-

The website I linked provides some information on what to do with the type of lap belt that requires a heavy duty belt shortening clip. They look very similar to a locking clip, but are designed for this purpose.

Lap belts can have either locking latch plates or sewn on latche plates.
