Eddie Bauer Sport Convertible Car Seat (Cosco Alpha Omega)

We are shopping for a convertible car seat for my 7 month old son. I have read Consumer Reports and know the Alpha Omega is not recommened for a Booster seat. As far as the car seat rankings though, it ranked the same or higher as the Britax Roundabout - the only place it ranked lower is ease of use and then only by one grade.

Does anyone have experience with this as a rear-facing and forward-facing car seat. With the booster problems, we would not use this as a booster.

I'd take Consumer Reports with a grain of salt...

There are some comments on these issues in our FAQ, questions #29 and #30 ( user.mc.net/~carseat/faq.html#Q29 ). Also see our features buying guide ( user.mc.net/~carseat/guide.html ). For safety, all current models will be very safe when used properly. They do vary quite a bit on convenience features and ease of use. The Cosco/EB seats are nice in that they do go to 35 pounds rear facing, and some are reasonably tall to accomodate taller kids for rear-facing a bit longer.

Good luck!

it might be this...

chances are the reason it isn't recommended is because the seat belt guides are the ones that the safety people have deemed unsafe becausae they can cause slack in the part that goes over the child. There are some that the shoulder seat belt can just slide around in which allow the seat belt to loosten and tighten and there are some that hug the shoulder belt snugly but if you pull on it and it gets loose over your child's chest it won't let it go back to being tight, so they don't think those are as safe. And now any booster seat that keeps the seatbelt tight isn't considered safe.

It is only a warning, these boosters CAN BE USED SAFELY!

Boosters with these types of guides can be used safely, as long as you are aware of the problem. The links provided previously contain some suggestions on proper and safe use of these models.

I dislike the Alpha Omega, because I don't think it's worth

the price. The Eddie Bauer version is more expensive without providing any safety, quality or convenience features! Personally, I think the Century Accel (now available with LATCH and relabeled "Graco ComfortSport) is a nicer seat for less money, and if you want to spend the same amount or more, there are seats which provide even more features. The saying is, "Jack of all trades, but master of none," and I really think that applies to the A/O. It tends to be too big as an infant seat (although your baby is getting older now), too small as a convertible seat (the top slots are lower than some other seats), and too deep as a booster (some people find that the belt adjuster holds the belt away from the child's body, because if its deep wings). Additionally, the life span of the A/O is only 5 years. That means that you will need to purchase another seat at that time, ANYWAY. If that's the case, why not get a seat that works better as a convertible seat, and then get a nice booster when the convertible is outgrown?

I've made a list of the seats that I think are a good place to start. It is posted below. pub59.ezboard.com/fcarsaf...ic&index=6

Re: Eddie Bauer Sport Convertible Car Seat (Cosco Alpha Omeg

I don't own this seat, but have worked with several at car seat checkup events. The base is rather large and tends to make it difficult to install rear-facing; however, it can be removed, which usually makes installation much easier. The harness height adjuster is really nice--you never have to re-thread the harness through slots as your child grows. The harness tightness adjuster is a total pain, though. Much more difficult to use than a Britax seat. I've never been able to get the harness as snug on a child as I would like (only able to fit 1 finger under harness at shoulder). The release button also tends to get buried in the back seat cushion when the seat is installed rear-facing, which means you're less likely to adjust the harness for each ride.

If I were in the market for a new seat, I'd look at something else. But, if you like the features and can use the seat properly, by all means, buy it.
