combination seat for 28 lb. 2 yo

I am so confused. I am trying to find a convertible seat that will later be used as a belt positioning booster for my 28 lb. 2 year old son. I also want one with LATCH (in case we EVER buy a new car). I've read Consumer Reports and the NHSTA 2001 compliance tests. I can't find a "combination seat" that passed NHSTA tests (although the results are confusing to interpret) and that Consumer's likes as a booster. Maybe I'm just being cheap, but I want to move my 4 mo. 18 lb. daughter into my son's Britax Roundabout. Should I just buy another Roundabout?

NHTSA Testing

All carseats on the market have passed standard compliance requirements. I believe the results you found are preliminary test results. You should call the NHTSA ( 1-888-DASH2DOT ) to confirm this.

Also, the new combination models with LATCH may vary from those tested in 2001, so the results may not apply anyway.

Good luck shopping!

Here's what I would do

Hi. I would use the CR as a guide. They do make some valid points about the shoulder belt guides on combination seats, but I'm not so sure the problem is as bad as they make it out to be for a vigilant parent. Of course, they are trying to look out for those parents who won't be as concerned . . . Plus, the report came out a year ago and manufacturers have made improvements to available seats and have released new models.

The NHSTA compliance tests are very difficult to interpret. Many times a seat will fail a test because the ink on the label was incorrect. But you can't tell from their list.

I would suggest being a smart consumer (you're already well on your way there!) and do some more research to find out what features may be right for you. Look for features, like a front harness adjuster, that will make the seat easier for you to use. Look for tall harness slots so there's lots of growth room, padding, a shoulder belt guide that's a loop, etc.

Here are some places that may help you:

www.car-safety.org/guide.html
www.carseatsite.com/recom..._seats.htm
and check out the link to the compatibility database at the top of this page.

Good luck and please write back if you have more questions!
