Century Next Step

After much consideration we bought our 9 month old daughter a Century Next Step convertible car seat. She is 21 pounds and around 28 inches tall.
This is a brand new (manuf.june/02) model tether enabled. It says for kids able to sit up on their own from 20 to X pounds.
Our concern is the forward facing exclusiveness vs rear facing over the next 2 months (since it's ok to travel facing forward when over a year???).
i've already tilted it (to make it recline more); so that her weight and 5 point harness make it more snug.
Still concerned...

Re: Century Next Step

Hi-

The NextStep is a nice combination booster model. I have one for my son.

You are correct that it is a concern to use this model for your 9 month old. It is indeed much safer to keep your baby rear-facing as long as possible. The absolute minimum recommendation for forward facing is 1 year AND 20 pounds, but it is preferable to continue rear-facing beyond that. Please see:

www.car-safety.org/rearface.html

I would highly recommend another seat that also goes rear-facing. Most convertible seats do go from 30 to 35 pounds rear-facing. If you would like a model that also goes beyond 40 pounds front-facing, you might consider the new Britax Marathon, Eddie Bauer 3in1 or the Cosco Alpha Omega. These models all go rear-facing to 33 or 35 pounds, and will last longer than most convertible models that are limited to 40 pounds. All are available in the 5-point harness. Please also see our basic information on Car Seat selection for more details:

If you have any further questions, please ask!

Why toddlers need to rear face...

"Child safety seats: Rear-face until at least one year" www.parentsplace.com/babi...76,00.html

"Extended Rear-Facing" www.thematlocks.com/jenni...ndedRF.htm

It really is critical for your child to remain rear facing for at least several more months, and longer is definitely safer! I encourage you to read the two articles I listed above and then purchase a seat with a 30-35 lb rear facing weight limit. If you'd like some suggestions, please ask!
