Baby outgrown infant seat?

My almost 7 month old baby measured 26 in and 17+lbs at her last checkup and is still in her infant seat which lists the max height as 26 in and weight as 20 lbs. Since she's at the max height (and within an inch of the top of the seat), we've started looking for an acceptable convertable seat as a replacement, but are running into a problem with placement of the shoulder straps. For all the models we've looked at, the straps are so far below her shoulder that when they are tightened sufficiently (meaning less than a fingers worth of wiggle room between her and the strap), they squish her into the seat such that she isn't really sitting upright (which is how we were told she should be sitting--her butt in the curve of the seat). At the same time, the next slot up seems to high, so we're left wondering what to do...

Most convertible seats should work-

I would highly suggest a visit to a local technician for a free inspection. Please use the "Free Carseat Inspection" link under the top banner.

When rear-facing, which is safest for your baby, you should use the shoulder strap slots at or below the shoulders. Most convertible seats should accomodate all but the tallest kids to 30 or 35 pounds while rear-facing.

Can you please mention which models you considered? There are models which have higher harness strap slots, but even at 26" and 17lbs, most should work with your daughter.

We're getting checked Saturday ;)

We ended up buying the Graco ComfortSport since it seemed to squish her the least of all the models we looked at (we'd been given the Evenflo Odyssey V as a shower gift, but the straps were too tall for her which is why we ended up buying the second seat). We've still got her in the Graco infant seat (whose name escapes me since it came as part of the stroller/seat combo) but we're headed to get a free seat check at the local Babies R Us this Saturday (9/21/02) to see which of all our seats we really should be using--if you're interested, I can let you know what they say. Its actually kind of exciting for us, because we just purchased a Mazda MPV that has latch (so hopefully our car seat will be installed properly!). Thanks again for your help, this is a WONDERFUL service!!!
