combo booster loop guides

We are looking at a combo booster seat for our 2yo. We know CR and a reputable store recommends the Cosco Summit especially because of the loop guides for the seatbelt when used as a booster. However, the name Cosco scares us because of its safety history. Besides the Britax boosters and this seat are there any others that have this feature?

Any opinions on the Summit?

We were going to buy the Graco Ultra Cargo, but the loop guides are holding us back.

Thanks.

Hi-

The Car Seat Specialty Airway has a loop guide that will not catch the shoulder belt, similar to the type on most backless boosters. Other models like the Graco Turbo and Jupiter Komfort Kruiser do, also.

A couple other things to keep in mind:

Boosters are only a pre-crash positioning device. The vehicle seat belt provides the primary restraint and is the main safety feature for a child in a booster. This is a bit different than a harnessed child seat. As such, it generally seems to be the case that boosters have far fewer major safety recalls than harnessed models.

Also, even models with the "problem" shoulder belt guides can be used safely, and will provide good protection in a crash. See also:

The Summit is very underrated by advocates, and its a nice child restraint. It isn't perfect, of course, so you may prefer another. I have a review here:

I hope that helps you in your search! Also see Ulrike's recommended combo seats:

I know it's tempting to think ahead, but I would really recommend you get a seat that works for you right now. Harness quality (non-twist straps and easy front harness adjuster) is something you'll be contending with on a daily basis for at least 2 more years, while, like Darren said, seatbelt guides aren't even mandatory (nice if you need them, but not necessary for safety if the belt fits right).
