I sent messages to them all!

I asked about instructions books, DOM, expiration dates, why don't they sell those in stores anymore...it's been a long time since I've seen that in a store, twisty straps--safe to use?

Hopefully we'll get some answers soon!

Hello, There are manufacturer's general instructions under the seat of this booster. It was made in either 1992 or 1993 - I have already boxed it so I cannot tell you which of the two dates precisely, but it is either 92 or 93. For an item that old, it is very fresh & clean -- but there is some light scuffing... I know what you mean, this is a popular item. Hope this helps you. Judy

My Reply---
All carseats--with the exception of older fisher prices expire after 6 years. They could then FAIL in a crash putting a child's life at risk.

The sheild boosters are NO longer sold in stores because they run the risk of internal injury on a child. The sheild goes across the soft part of the abdomen--in an accident this could really hurt a child. Also a child could strike their head on the hard sheild--even though it has a THIN layer of padding and die from the forces in an accident.

If you continue to sell this--you could allow an unsuspecting parent to put their precious child in harms way. Please take this auction down and save the life of a child.

If you don't believe me--please look at this website by a child passanger safety tech--it has the dangers of a sheild boosters and why they are no longer approved by the NHTSA--

Thanks--A person who cares about child safety

march 4 1993. i don't have the book, its a basic seat. i don't know why they don't sell these anymore. i have a few older seats that i still use because i don't care to go out and buy new. they all do the same thing.

My reply--
Part 1
While I was waiting I did some research and this is what I came up with from the following site:
http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/shieldbooster.aspx
American Academy of Pediatrics: Children who weigh 40 pounds or less are best protected in a seat with a full harness. Significant injuries have occurred to children in shield boosters in crashes due to ejection, excessive head movement, and shield contact.
National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA): Boosters with removable shields. Use without the shield to make lap and shoulder belts fit right. A child who has outgrown their convertible seat, yet weighs less than 40 pounds can be moved into a high-back booster with a harness.
Web MD: There's more evidence against shield-style child booster seats. Children are at nearly eight times higher risk of serious injury when riding in these seats, a new study shows.
The most important thing to understand is that this seat is only tested for frontal collision.
more to com

Part 2
Shield Boosters provide little or no upper-body protection. In many cases, the children who are injured or killed in these either:

Get flung too far forward, resulting in serious head or spinal injuries or
Submarine UNDER the shield and have spinal/neck injuries or are actually decapitated.
There are also unfortunate cases where children are thrown OUT in a side-impact or rollover collision.
Also about using older seats--found on lots of different websites--
You shouldn't use seats that are past the expiration date--6 years past the manufacturing date. I know I would never use a seat that's too old--I hope you wouldn't either--I know your children are the most precious thing to you.

Thanks for your time though.

Great job!

Here, pass this link on. 10 year old carseat crash video
http://home.comcast.net/~dcbsr/test...Child_Facing_Forwards_ten_years_old_seat.mpeg

Then this one of a new seat.
http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_...videos/test2002/frontcrash/maxicosipriori.mpg

That should convince him. If he wants to endanger his own kids, that's awful, but some parents won't be swayed, but there's no reason he has to endanger other peoples' kids, especially now that he's been educated. If someone gets hurt because of him the parents could sue him for everything he has, and win, IMO.

If there are recalls on the seats, Ebay will yank the auction

Report Recalled Items

ellers on eBay should take a few minutes to check with the CPSC and ensure that the products they're selling have not been the subjects of a CPSC recall. The CPSC, an independent federal regulatory agency, protects consumers by issuing warnings about goods that might be hazardous, and even issuing recalls of certain products. Buyers on eBay should educate themselves about recalled products in areas where they might be doing some buying. The CPSC's About Me page was created specifically to alert eBayers about potentially hazardous items that might inadvertently get listed on eBay. It also has a link to the CPSC Web site that's loaded with helpful safety tips and a searchable database of recalled products.

All child safety seats that are not authorized for sale in the U.S. are strictly prohibited on eBay. Get more information on car seats from SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A.

Also consider consulting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website to learn information about recalled motor vehicles, child safety seats, vehicle equipment and tires.

Yikes! On the video did the "dummy" actually flip around? Do you know what failed on the car-seat? Was it the harness? Where did you find this video? Is it to demonstrate poor fit or expired seats. Sorry so many questions. Just horrified and trying to process everything.

No idea. Someone else here posted that a few days ago in another thread. I hope they see this.

It looks to me like the plastic around the harness slots ripped out (because it is weak due to its age) so the harness had nothing to hold it in.

Well if u don't want it thats fine. But it is also unsafe for kids to ride in trucks that don't have a doublecab. But u don't see then going out and buying a new. You work with what u have. i used this because i was low income and couldn't afford the high pricey one. But i do have (2) 5 point seats that turn into the highback booster. i have not yet listed them though but i do have pics.

My Response
I understand--doing what you have to do to get buy---my family has certainly never been rich. But I do believe in doing whats best. No seat--no go.

Here's some crash test footage so you can SEE what can happen to kids in an expired carseat:
http://home.comcast.net/~dcbsr/test/..._old_seat.mpeg

Then this is a new seat:
http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_s...cosipriori.mpg

If you can't afford new seats--there are resources to help you out.

Also--if someone bought this seat from you and it's unsafe--and you now know--could you be held liable in a court of law. Not a risk I'd be willing to take.

Is it legal for him to sell them in ebay in the first place?

"All child safety seats that are not authorized for sale in the U.S. are strictly prohibited on eBay. Get more information on car seats from SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A."

This says to us that a seat that is expired (which a retailer couldn't sell as a usable seat, just a collector's item) is not authorized to be sold, so is prohibited on ebay. What do you guys think?

Their Response:
i cant answer all of your questions. i am selling for a friend and they are out of town. the straps are solid, no frays and lock down tight. the wording on the back says do not use after december 2005. if you are worried about using this seat DO NOT BID. THANK YOU

My Response:
This seat is already 6 months past it's expiration date. So you are KNOWINGLY selling a product that could put a child's LIFE endanger?

Here is a link of what happens to an expired car seat in an accident:
http://home.comcast.net/~dcbsr/test/..._old_seat.mpeg

This is what happens in an accident with a newer seat:
http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_s...cosipriori.mpg

You can pull and tug on the straps all you want--but your stength will never equal the force of an accident of a 25 pound child at 30 miles an hour. That is 25x30=750 pounds of force on those straps.

Please take down this auction instead of risking a childs life to make a few bucks. Are a few bucks worth a childs life?

Thank You

I didn't put this in the response---but I'm reporting this to ebay--it's not recalled--but it is past its usable date

I'm not aware of where to find that information. I'm sorry, it was manufactured in 1991.

My Reply
I did a little research yesterday and this is what I found. You obviously care about kids in cars since you had a booster in the early 90's before they were mandatory. Thats why I'm sharing this with you.

http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/shieldbooster.aspx

Also---I found on tons of websites that all carseats, including boosters, expire in 6 years.

I know the auction has ended, but please don't relist or sell locally. I know you wouldn't want an unsuspecting parent to use this seat and their child be hurt or worst yet--killed in this seat. Please destroy and put in the trash over a couple weeks so no dumpster divers get it.

Thank You

It's not even a Graco. It's a Gerry. A company that was bought out by Evenflo in the late 90s.
Gah! WHY do people buy these things?
