Big baby

My baby is 4 1/2 months old, 18.5 pounds, 26 inches. We have an infant rear-facing car seat good until 22 pounds. All recommendations say keep baby rear-facing until 1 year and 20 pounds. My baby may be 20 pounds next week! Who knows how big he'll be by the time he's a year. I know we need to replace his infant seat, but what should I get? Help!

There are lots of nice convertible seats......

It's ok, don't worry <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)"> . The seat you need is called a convertible seat (sometimes called an infant/toddler seat) and almost all of them have much higher rearfacing limits, like 30 pounds for Evenflos and Gracos, 33 pounds for Britaxes, and 35 pounds for Coscos. They rearface until those weight limits, then they can be forward facing until 40 pounds. One seat, the Britax Marathon, is a somewhat larger seat that accomodates children to 65 pounds and has very tall harness slots (I have one for my 3 year old, and she only weighs 30 pounds, so she is rearfacing!). You can try seats out in your car at babies r us, and choose the one that fits your car and your needs best. (I'd like to throw in a little warning about the Alpha Omega or Eddie Bauer 3 in 1...It may seem like a good deal, that it will last till 80 pounds, but really, the harness slots are quite low, and many, many children outgrow them by height at age 2 or 3, when they are far to young to be using the seat as a booster alone). hope that helps a little, Julie

Re: There are lots of nice convertible seats......

I agree with Julie--don't worry. My dh and I make giant babies (both my son and daughter were over 21 lbs. at 6 months) and they do slow down in weight gain once they become more mobile.

Since there are so many convertibles to choose from and they all fit differently in different cars, it does pay to do some research beforehand. Try looking up your vehicle in the compatibility database (link at the top of the page) to see which seats may/may not fit. Also, try this site, www.carseatsite.com/recom...seats.htm, to help you narrow your search down.

All car seats meet federal safety requirements, so it's basically choosing user-friendly features and a seat that will fit your car and child. One thing we do recommend is to stick with a 5-point harness instead of an overhead shield. A 5-point harness fits a child better and will grow with the child more easily than an overhead shield seat.

Thank you both so much! I was starting to panic! My baby might be big, but I want him safe! I'm going to check the website today and go to Babies R Us this weekend!
Thanks again.
