3rd Row Seat Safety

Do any crash tests consider the safety of passengars in the 3rd row of a car? Our minivan, which had a five star safety rating, was recently hit from behind and totaled (was stopped, waiting to turn left and was hit at close to 50mph). As with just about all vehicles with a 3rd row the last row is very, very close to the rear bumper.

Thankfully our daughter, who normally sits in the 3rd row, had just been dropped of for a playdate as damage in this area was quite severe.

Anyone know of any tests that look at the safety of the 3rd row? Anyone else have experience with accidents from the rear?

At this point we are wondering if we should replace our minivan with a Suburban or Yukon XL as they are just about the only cars on the market with meaningful room between the 3rd row and rear bumper.

minivan with a third-row hit from behind, occupant killed 50% of time

Just ran into this -- quite concerning -- any comments / thoughts / additional information:

"When a minivan with a third-row occupant is hit from behind, the occupant is killed half the time, according to a Ford Motor analysis."

correct use of the safety belt is key to surviving rear crashes, safety experts note>>>

Remember most people still don't buckle up in the back seat, that has GOT to contribute to a huge proportion of the deaths. A properly restrained child, particularly one in a harnessed seat or highback booster, is a lot better off than the kid whose mom thinks being in the back seat is safe without being buckled (because it's not the law...if it were important, it would be a law right? that's what most people think, anyway....).

I'm not at all concerned about putting my own kids in the third row....the total lack of crush space from a side impact in even the front or middle row is much more dangerous, overall.
