Does it sound like my 4yo is too small for a Regent?

My 6yo has a Regent, and I tried my just-turned-4 yo in it today, to see if I should buy her one. She didn't look right sitting in it. She looked like she was sitting in an almost reclined position, while my 6yo doesn't look like that in it, at all. My impression was that her thighs aren't long enough for her knees to reach the edge of the seat to bend there, so she's slumped somewhat, kind of like a kid who's too small to pass the 5-step test in a regular seat belt. Does that make sense? I tried to have her scoot back more, but she didn't seem to be able to--it's not like there was a noticeable gap behind her. She is small for her age--probably about the size of an average 3 year old. Would it be common for a child that age/size to not fit the Regent well yet, or does it sound like I'm doing something wrong?

TIA,
Kirsten

I'm not really familiar with the Regent, but my friend has one, and my daughter fits comfortably in it at 2.5 and has for at least a few months. It seems unusual for your daughter not to fit in it at her age. Hopefully someone with a Regent will chime in and give you some suggestions...

Hmm... I don't really know. Did you sit her in it using the first crotch strap setting? Just a thought. The second setting (outer) is only for a child who weighs 50 lbs. to 80 lbs.

My son fits great in his regent, he is about the size of a 3 year old. I have a picture of his legs while in the seat, I will try to post it if I can figure it out.

Well, not that I would use the seat for him, but my 16 month old (29 lbs, 32") looks fine in our Regent. Are you installing it with the recline bar? I got a better and more upright fit without it.

The crotch strap is in the closest position, but I am using the recline bar, too. The install is rock solid the way it is, but perhaps that makes it too reclined for my younger dd, for some reason. I'll try to take a picture of her in it today, that may help show what I'm talking about. It may not even be a problem, it just doesn't look quite right to me.

Re:

I don't know if this will help or not, but here is my daughter Katy in her Regent, she is 18 months in this pic. She has a long torso (too long for bottom harness height, even), and fairly short legs, but she seems totally comfortable in the seat, and she LOVES it, too. There is definitely a gap between her and the crotch buckle, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Leila was also 2 when she started using the Husky (older name for the Regent) -- she's 4 now & it's her primary seat....

It's actually preferable that the knees be as you described as opposed to the knees hanging past the edge of the seat, which can lead to the legs going numb & back aching on long rides

Just make sure the crotch strap is as close as it can be, the harness slots are even with or above the shoulders, harness is tight & the seat is installed correctly then kiddo will be very safe ;)

The thing we like about the Husky/Regent is that the seat is so wide that kids can change their leg position in various ways when looking for change in comfort -- for head support when sleeping my kiddo just snugles up a blankey for herself :)

My super skinny 4 year old slouches in her seat like that because even in the closest position the crotch strap is still a good 2" away from her body. I remind her to sit up straight, always use the belly pad, and try to install the seat as upright as I can. Britax claims it isn't an issue, but it still weirds me out a little.

She can probably comfortably criss-cross-applesauce her legs, too.
I'm sure it's just a 'looks really different and weird' kind of thing, rather than an outright 'not fitting' thing, you know?

:)
