Posted for Kelyn: Booster limits

My daughter is 5 1/2 and 48 lbs. She is presently in a Booster Seat with the harness in the back middle seat of a Town and Country Minivan. I had heard rumor that when they get to 45 lbs. they are to be using the shoulder strap with the carseat not the harness, is this true? Also, is it safe to put the seat in one of the captains chairs instead of the back bench?

If you are in the US, the weight limit is....

40 pounds. Do you have your manual? Are the stickers still on the side of the seat? There should be a some indication that 40 pounds is the harness limit (and you can usually order a new manual from the seat manufacturers website...i know how easy it is to misplace those things!). If you are in Canada, the limit is 47 or 48 pounds on most booster seats. It's definitely time to take the harness off and use the seat as a booster, or buy a dedicated belt positioning booster for her. Using a captains chair is perfectly safe as long as you have both lap and shoulderbelts...all boosters MUST be used with both a lap and shoulder belt. If you feel she is too wiggly to sit still in the seat as a booster, there are 2 options in seats that harness past 40 pounds: the britax marathon (to 65 pounds) or the britax husky (to 80 pounds)...I have my 5 yo in a husky, since otherwise he leans out of position way too much for the seatbelts to keep him safe in a crash <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)"> .

Re: Posted for Kelyn: Booster limits

In the USA, most combination booster models have 40 pound limits on the harness system. Above 40 pounds, you must remove the harness and use them as a belt positioning booster. One model, the Safety Baby Airway, does have a 50 pound limit. In Canada, some combination booster models are certified to 47/48 pounds with the harness when used with a top-tether.

So, if you are in the USA, you do need to be using the vehicle lap AND shoulder belt for your daughter. If you are not comfortable with her using her model as a booster, there are a couple options with a harness like the Britax Marathon (65 pounds) and Britax Husky (80 pounds).

As long as the carseat fits well, it is fine to put them in the second row chairs or the third row bench. The middle of the third row is very similar for overall risk to an outside chair in the second row. Any seat in the back is safe if the child restraint fits well there, though we do prefer seating positions as far from any possible point of impact if there is a choice. So, the center of the middle row is the first choice, followed by the center of the third row or outside of the second row, then the outside spots in the third row. If you are using a booster, you MUST have a lap AND shoulder belt, so the center of the third row may not be an option for you.

Please let us know if you have any more questions! Also, please include brand and model of your booster if possible:)
