I am trying to add a custom avatar. I have the photo resized as an avatar in photobucket. I have tried the URL as well as the IMG and with both I get an "invalid" message. What am I doing wrong?

Whatever size photobucket says is an avatar.
100x75 (46 KB)

That may be over one of the limits- on the avatar upload page, it should tell you what the limits are. I will check also.

It looks like the size is okay, but the KB is over the limit. I think that's out of my technical comfort zone...can I fix that?

If it is a jpeg format file, there should be an option for "compression" somewhere when you save the file on your computer. You might see a slider or have to enter a number. Increase the compression a couple notches, it may even give you an estimate of the file size before you save it.
If it is not a jpeg, then save it as a jpeg instead and that should do it.

Avatar sizes have increased somewhat. Registered users can now use avatars up to 75x75 or 100wx75h and 16k file size maximum. Senior Community Members (minimum 60 days registered and 25 posts) can use up to 100x100 and 20k maximum file size.
Users may turn off avatars, signatures and photos in their User CP control panel if you prefer an uncluttered, text-only forum display.
