My mom bought a 2007 Suzuki XL7 specifically so she had a way to transport her grandkids, but there aren't top tethers in the 3rd row. Does anyone know if they can be retrofitted?

No, unfortunately there is no way to retrofit top tethers in a vehicle with manufacture-installed tethers all ready present.

This is why I caution parents STRONGLY against the latest run of crossovers....although they appear to be family friendly, they are not, as the third row rarely has top tethers, making it essentially useless to a family with children.

Ugh, that totally sucks. I didn't have any say in the car she purchased, and the sales person told her, "You can have 5 car seats in this car if you want!" so she thought it would be great. She regularly drives at least 3 grandkids around, and it makes me nervous that the two back row kiddos don't get top tethers.

That sucks. We just got rid of our 2001 Suzuki XL7 a couple of months ago to purchase a van. We didn't have LATCH but we did have top tether anchors in all 5 seat positions. It was awesome when I was home and babysitting. I was ble to install two Radian's in the third row and a Boulevard in second row and tether all three.

Why do car companies do things like this?

The van we purchased has latch and top tether anchors in the captain chairs and one top tether anchor in the third row. It worked for us because I'm back to work and no longer babysitting. I only have two car seats in the van, a Britax Frontier and Clek booster. Both in captains chairs, Clek via latch and Frontier long belt install and top tether.
