Recaro seats

Hi all! My husband and I are expecting our first at the end of the year and turning our minds to child seats, etc. We both really like the Recaro seats but they are not available in Canada. Easy enough for me to get from the US. My question is, is there a governing body in Canada which dictates which seats are/are not allowed for use in Canada? I've checked Transport Canada but can't seem to get anywhere.

Hi! You've come to the right place. I'll give you the short answer and let a tech come and explain the rest. Basically, you cannot use a seat in Canada that is not certified for Canada. Recaro has not had any of their seats certified for Canada, so it is not legal to use them here.

What specifically do you like about the Recaro seats? We still have a lot of nice seats here in Canada. Were you wanting to start with a convertible seat, or an infant only seat? What type of vehicle do you drive? We should be able to suggest some great seats for you:)

Any seat used in Canada MUST have a Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) sticker to prove that they have met Transport Canada requirements. Car seats made elsewhere have different compliance requirements.

It is illegal to install or use a seat that does not have the CMVSS sticker. You could potentially be fined for it.

It's not all that easy to get US seats into Canada.

We have plenty of really good convertible seats here these days. Our market has opened up drastically over the past 3-4 years.

I realize Recaro has an excellent reputation, but please give Britax or Sunshine Kids some thought if you'd prefer a higher end seat.

The safest seat is the one that fits your child and vehicle and is used correctly each and everytime.
