So my friend wants to cloth diaper her new baby  when it is born. She is looking for something that is easy to use and will last from birth (after the early few days) to PL. I don't have much experience with pockets, but they seem like what she is looking for.

I am going to buy her a getting started package as a gift (she is a REALLY good friend - ;)) but I need suggestions on what to get. I do have a few BG 3.0 and I like them enough. I haven't used them much to be able to form a true opinion of them. I also have had both FBs and now I have a few FB OS. The regular FBs didn't get used cause I got sick and the OS we have had for a month or so, but I only used them a couple of times before life got to complicated for me to use cloth :(.

What would you buy? BG 3.0 or FB OS? Money isn't an object since I have it saved and am probably going to spend $300 + for a kit. She already told me that if she doesn't like them that I can have them back for when we have a newbie.

TIA for any CD advice you can give.

I don't think there is a 'one type of diaper' to use from birth to pl'ing that's going to truly work. To be successful with cloth, IMO, you have to be flexible. I've tried virtually every style out there and finally have settled on a system that works for us.

We use a combo of pockets (bG 3.0 for daycare and outings) and fitteds and prefolds at home. Yes, we could use the bG 24 hrs a day, though we do get wicking at night...I like fitteds and prefolds for their breathability...and well, the simple cuteness of fitteds is enough to drive me over the edge. ;) And then the wonderful simplicity of prefolds. No stash should be complete without them.

What I would do, if I were to have a nb tomorrow is use prefolds and fitteds for the first few months slowly adding in pockets as they grew into them. But not every dipe is going to work with every kid...so you have to be willing to experiment. ;)

Thank you for the advice.

I think what I am going to do is just get her a sample pack to try stuff out with the promise of getting her more when she finds the ones she likes!

Thanks again!

I definitely second that no CD rotation is complete without prefolds and covers. Honestly, with those first few months of crazy runny BF poop... it was so much easier to keep up with prefolds versus separating inserts out of pockets.

However, I did love the x-small and small FB in the beginning, and of course my bG 3.0.

How about 12 newborn orange edge prefolds from green mountain diapers and 12 infant prefolds with a few of the new Thirsties DUO covers (size 1) - they have fabulous colors. And then a sample of FB, bG 3.0, HH (happy heiny) - they all come in one-size options.

BTW, a CD starter kit is an AWESOME gift!

In general I prefer infant prefolds and sized covers because they are economical and easy to wash. I liked our bg 3.0s but the velcro will probably get tatty after 1.5 years of use. I would go with the fuzzi bunz one size for the snaps or even the all in one bumgenius with snaps. They hold up better and never scratch the baby. I don't really know how these might fit a very small baby, but they certainly fit my son until he was potty trained.
