View Full Version : If we go straight to a Radian for brand new baby, what is the best stroller, carrier, sling, etc?

I am not sure where to post this, but I have decided to go straight into a Radian due to my 3 in a row issue in a small car. We have everyone puzzled in and safe when the time comes, but I am admittedly not used to the idea of not having baby in an infant seat to tote around.
I looked all over Babies R Us today for a stroller that I can use with a brand new baby (without an infant seat in it) but came up with nothing. How have others handled not having something to hold baby while keeping hands free? I plan to find a sling/carrier (any suggestions?) but I can think of all kinds of situations where I'm going to need to not have to hold baby from time to time.
Thanks for any suggestions and for redirecting my post to the proper place!

Any stroller with a close-to-full recline will be fine. :)
I like the Maclaren Techno A LOT. A lot of people also like the Peg Perego P3. :)

Ring slings are great for newborns. As a matter of fact, I find it easier to put baby in a carrier than haul the bucket in and out of the car. If you find your baby prefers to be more upright, you can try a carrier like a BabyHawk... I just got one to use with my 4mo and it's super comfy. (He's heavy, so I find the ring sling uncomfortable anymore.)
We also have a Graco stroller, and while the bucket can snap into it, I can also use it with him without it, as long as I recline it well. (Although I'll be honest to say that I'm developing 'gear' disdain and am finding myself just wearing him more and more often.)

The P3 or Zippy (or Chicco C1, discontinued but a great stroller if you can find one) are all great full-featured strollers with full reclines suitable for a newborn. None of these are tippy like the Techno, so you can hang bags off the handles and the stroller won't tip. Plus, they all have great canopies AND toddler steps. My P3 is my favorite double for the toddler step.
For all-terrain (swivel wheel air tire) strollers, the MBUS, BJCity Series (elite or classic) or the BOB Revolution all have full reclines. Having owned all three of those, the MBUS is my favorite and could have been my 'only' stroller (17 strollers later).

DS does have an infant seat, but I opt to not use it as a 'carrier' most of the time - it's big and bulky (and not the biggest or bulkiest by far, considering it's just a Snug Ride!) and my DS is kind of a chunker. We babywear the vast majority of the time - when DS was a newborn I used wraps the most often (a Didymos woven wrap and a Sleepy Wrap, which is a stretchy wrap similar to a Moby). I started using a soft structured carrier when DS was about 6 weeks and stick with it most of the time (I use a beco, DH uses an Ergo Sport) just because it's the easiest in the moment. I also have a couple ring slings that I use as well.
We don't have a stroller that can accommodate a newborn/small infant. I've propped him in my Bob Revolution, but that was only when I couldn't wear him (I was trying on pants at the mall). We took both kids to the zoo when DS was 5 days old, and used the wrap, and we went to an amusement park today with a large group, and I didn't miss the stroller. I used my beco and ring sling most of the time today, and just passed him around when taking DD on rides (DH hung out with him when I went on the ferris wheel; etc).
It can be done, I promise.
P.S., DS also rode in the Radian at the beginning in DH's car. The infant insert is really nice (says the girl who hates all infant inserts as a general rule).

What budget are you looking at? Many strollers are suitable for an infant. Even gracos have a full recline. THe cortina has a full recline, and of course the P3 and techno, as mentioned above. But, there are many many other high end strollers (not available at BRU) that offer some fabulous features if you end up not liking baby wearing, or the baby ends up not liking it;) Maxi cosi has brought over the loola which is a reversible seat umbrella fold stroller. There are the bugaboos, and the simmons pearl has a reversible seat with a good price point at around 200. THere is also the pliko switch, which is a P3 with a reversible seat. The uppa baby vista (has the bassinet, also). Or you might be able to find something good on craigslist if vigilant. The silver cross 3D is another full featured umbrella fold stroller (like the P3, C1, zippy) but also has a fabulous bassinet insert that makes a wonderful rf space for an infant, and the stroller can be folded with it on. By 6 weeks, the bob with a warm fuzzy has worked fine for my babies. The baby jogger city mini would work also.
There are plenty of options. It depends on what you are looking for:) I also have a ring sling I like, and a pouch I like but not as much as the ring sling. I really want to try a wrap though.
Good luck!

Eh. I love my Bob revolution, but I don't think the harness is suitable for an infant. I'm not a fan of straight into strollers for an infant. The strollers that are designed for infants tend to be bulky and take awhile to set up. If you're just running into a store, it's a lot to take the baby out of the seat, open the stroller...
I really liked my Moby. If I were going to forgo an infant seat (which I wouldn't do), I would pick up a structured carrier, like a baby bjorn, in addition to a sling. They are all hard to put on, IMO.
It might seem like you are saving money, but unless you are a dedicated babywearer, it's not really worth it.

I have a lot of strollers suitable for a newborn, and all they take to set up is a push down with my foot to open. Just my:twocents:
