View Full Version : Saw a weird Odyssey

It looked more like a big car than a van. It even had doors that open like a car (non-sliding). And it looked like it may only seat 6 total. Is that how the Odyssey started out? Or is this some weird one?

I also saw a weird Tauraus today. I thought they were similar to the Escort. But this one looked more like a small SUV (crv-ish).

Yep, Odyssey started out with "car" doors - it was a HUGE mistake on their part. But, now they are all fancy :) with sliding doors.

yup, that's the pre-99.

as for the weird Taurus, the Freestyle was renamed the Taurus X (crossover SUV).

The "weird" Odysseys ran from 2005-2008 but that was the car that introduced the Magic Seat to the world! My grandpa had one, it was actually pretty nice. But you can't beat sliding doors.

The seating was 2+3+2, like most seven passenger SUVs.

do you mean 1995-1998? I didn't know they had the extra seat. My friend has a 1995, but it's just a 6 seater.

Yup, previously I thought it looked kind of like a cross between a mini-van and a wagon. My boss at the time had bought one when his 2nd child was born. That was around 1999/2000 - not sure that was the year of the Ody, could have been used.

Ah, yes that's what it was. Guess they didn't like the name freestyle

And the old weird Odyssey was way weird. Not what I'd want in a van, lol. The 2nd row passenger had to get out to let the 3rd row passengers in. LOL, you don't know how many time I read the name on the back of the vehicle to make sure it really did say 'Odyssey'

Ford decided to rename the Freestyle crossover the Taurus X, along with renaming the Ford 500 sedan as the Taurus sedan. Ford's marketing/naming decision makers had originally gone with the marketing strategy of branding their SUVs and crossover models with model names starting with the letter F when the Freestyle first came out on the market. Then Ford switched gears upon realizing "Taurus" had such strong brand/name recognition. It's dizzying to keep track, lol.

d'oh, yes. I also seem to remember the EX models having captains chairs in the second row, where the LX models (like my grandpa's) had a solid bench there.

Yea one of my neighbors has the old ody, it does look very odd, and of course none of the kids are in seats (no babies but def booster age kids)
