So, I was reading the Radian manual online and maybe this has been covered here before but I took the manual to say that LATCH can be used to 48 lbs unless the vehicle says otherwise... so I took that to mean that LATCH could be used up to 65 pounds in the Subaru where the LATCH is rated up to 65 pounds per manual????
Am I reading that right? Cuz I thought I also heard that no seat sold in the US could be LATCHED any higher than 48 pounds...
EEK.... I'm confusing myself. Here's the exact words:
"Do not use vehicle's LATCH anchorage points to install restraint for a child weighing more than 48 lbs. (22kg), unless vehicle manual allows." pg. 4 Radian XT

Well, the only one who allows it is Subaru (60 pounds, not 65).
I don't know if I'd go above 48 pounds, but as Subaru and the Radian are both ok with it then I guess technically it'd be ok.
The Safeguard Go can be used to 60 pounds with LATCH in any vehicle. That's the only one I know of off the top of my head that goes above 48 pounds with LATCH (not counting LATCHed in boosters).

60 pounds... I remembered incorrectly. But still, that seems so high. You wouldn't do it Wendy??? Why?
This is all just curiousity, we have a Subaru Outback but it's an '00 and doesn't have LATCH at all.

Because Radian says 48 pounds "except". So why limit it to 48 pounds? Why not just say to the limit of the car?
OTOH, if it was the only way to install the seat I would in that car, but seeing as every other car is 48 pounds, I'm sure by 49 or 52 pounds or whenever it became an issue I'd have experience installing it in nearly every kind of car and would be fine with a seatbelt.
Course for us it's moot. Piper will be too tall for the harness before 48 pounds.

But why would you choose to not do latch, just because it's harder for the Radian on average or because you don't trust it or what?

LATCH is easier with the Radian, generally, than the seatbelt. However, as with other things, the Radian is the odd man out. So I also wonder why everyone else limits it but the Radian is ok with it. It should be fine. The seat was tested apparently above 48 pounds. I'm just conservative on some issues and I would probably feel better with a seatbelt after 48 pounds (which last I looked was what the sticker on my Radian said, not "except").

I see the same thing on page 4 of my Radian65 manual. However, on page 20 (beginning of the section on FFing LATCH install), it says do not use LATCH for children over 48 pounds. Period. So I wouldn't use LATCH with the Radian over 48 pounds.
The page 4 statement is a bit more general, like it's saying to assume that the vehicle weight limit is 48 pounds unless you know otherwise, and no child restraint (Radian or other) should be used with LATCH for a child over 48 pounds (unless vehicle states higher limit). Does that make any sense?

It does make sense. I was just always under the impression that the latch was good UP to 48 pounds as long the vehicle manual had mutual feelings. lol Sorry, I'm at a loss for words. Like LATCH in my Honda is good for 40 so that trumps the 48. Latch in the Subaru is 65 so 48 trumps that (which is the conclusion that I've found here) but this was also the confusion I found earlier. I guess I didn't realize that there were seats available in the US that would state 48 unless the manual says otherwise because also this was worded such that if I didn't realize my car only went to 40 pounds I would use it on my 46 pound DSS1. The wording is such that it sounds like 48 no matter what and higher if your car allows.
I started to ramble... but yeah. Make sense.
Again, none of this applies to me but I'm taking the CPS class next month and I'm starting to see things as they may apply to those I help and not just myself!

Interesting... So as not to derail your thread, I started a Canadian spin-off on this that you might be interested in following - http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=80599

(I can't find my Radian manual right now so I just want to clarify)
The LATCH limit for the Radian is 48 lbs? (unless a different limit is specified for the vehicle?)

Right. There's a sticker on the side of the seat that says it too.

The LATCH limit for the Radian is 48 pounds, unless a lower limit is specified for the vehicle. On page 20 (beginning of the section on FFing LATCH install), it says do not use LATCH for children over 48 pounds. Period.
