I had to take the nautilus out of the car yesterday to adjust the straps and when I put it back in it was so loose but the buckle never got loosened. I completely untwisted the belt stalk and then re twisted it 3 full turns. But even with three full turns the belt stalk was still too long and I couldn't get the seat in tight at all. So I twisted it 2 more full turns and now it's rock the car solid. The problem is thats 5 full turns and now the stalk is twisted pretty tight . I'm having it checked by a tech tomorrow. But I wanted your opinions too. Before I took it out to adjust the straps I only had the stalk twisted 3 full turns and it was rock solid. I guess the seat compressed and stayed that way or something.

The maximum amount of times that you can twist a buckle stalk is 3 times. Is it possible you had it twisted more than three times before? Also, what kind of car do you drive? That sounds like a really long buckle stalk. I believe it is possible to shorten a buckle stalk with a belt shortening clip if you have to. I would pm Judi about that if I were you. I think she has mentioned having experience with that. Others on here might also have experience, I just remember her saying something.

The car is a 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora with leather interior. I tried putting the rear facing seat in the middle but that just wouldn't work at all.

Just a thought-when you had the seat out of the car, did you accidentally change the recline mode? Maybe you had it in recline mode in the car, three twists were enough, took the seat out, somehow the seat ended up in upright mode, you put it back in, and three twists aren't enough? It's just a thought. :) Hopefully it's that simple.

You know you might be on to something. I did have it fully reclined when I first installed it in the car. I took it out the other day to adjust the straps and it sat in the house for 2 days before I put it back in the car. The kids were playing in it constantly. It's VERY possible that they played with the recline mechanism. The vehicle seat has a natural recline so it looks the same and I didn't even think about it. Do you really think the recline on the front of the seat will make any difference in the way that it installs at the back of the seat? When dh gets home from work I will check it.

I think it's very possible that could be the problem. Fingers crossed it's that simple! :)

ooh, I was playing this game during the weekend!

Twisting the belt stalk in the opposite direction seemed to give me enough room to clear the latchplate. Reclining the seat also seems to help gain maybe an eighth inch? Although it wouldn't work for me, because yours sounds more severe you might be able to get the buckle into the belt path if you untwist the belt.

Good luck!

If I leave it untwisted the buckle ends up being right at the bend of the belt path. I will try twisting it in the opposite direction and reclining it to see if that helps.

thanks for all the suggestions guys.

In our 00 Subaru Impreza, the recline makes all the difference in whether or not our Nautilus will install in the center position. I hope that its something simple like that for you!

same here, the nauti will not install in our '00 quest if not in recline mode.
