Is it true that when you sleep in car with airconditioning on and engine running, you can die of carbon monoxide poisoning? Where as if you, turn off the engine, then it is ok?

The source of carbon monoxide is the exhaust fumes from the engine, either at the tail pipe or earlier if there are leaks in the system.
The air-conditioning system itself is sealed, and should not be a problem if it is in good condition. Of course, if your windows are closed and fumes are getting in, that does make the problem worse.
If you are outside in a moving vehicle, this should not be a problem if your exhaust system is in good shape. You certainly do not want to leave the engine running for extended periods in a garage or enclosed space. Unless you suspect a problem with your exhaust or air conditioning, you should have no problems sleeping in a moving car, even with the air conditioning on:-)
