We are looking for a car seat for our 2.5 year old son. It would be for my husbands car when just the two of them go out. He currently has a car seat that holds from 9 to 15 kgs (20 to 35 lbs). We'd prefer to get a child seat that will last him until he's 10 (ok maybe not 10, but close). He'll only use it infrequently but I still need it to be as safe as possible. What are my options, keeping in mind that I'm in Switzerland?

You don't mention if your son is riding rear facing or forward facing. The safest thing is to ride rear facing for as long as possbible. Advice varies with country. Sweden , who have reached furthest in car seat safety recommend rear facing until at least age 4.

A seat which would last you a very long time is the Swedish Britax Multi Tech, which is certified for Europe (ECE R44). This seat is popular all around the world for it's high seat shell, rear facing use longer than any other seat, and overall long life.

It allows rear facing until 25 kg, forward facing with harness until 25 kg, and forward facing with seat belt (as a belt positioning booster) until 25 kg. In reality, this means rear facing until at least 4 but usually 5 for most kids. Most kids can use this seat from age 8 months to about 7-9 years.

The seat is easy to install/use and will fit virtually any vehicle unless it's ultra small
