I am trying to install my twins marathons FF. When installing, does the base of the marathon have to sit completely flat against the bottom of the seat? Or can it lift up a little bit so the seat will sit more upright?

It should be flush with the seat.... what vehicle are you installing in and what is the age/weight of your twins?

Welcome to C-S.org :)

Can we start with how old your twins are and how much do they weigh?

To answer your question, no, you cannot. Sometimes the headrest intereferes with getting the Marathon comfortably on the vehicle seat. Removing the headrest is the best fix for this.

Is it reclined? You can install it FF in recline mode if your DD's are less than 33lbs (15kg) but you might need to do some adjusting ... at which pt a tech can help you ;) Just thought I would ask.

If the child is under 33 lbs, then he should be rearfacing ;)

Sure, but that depends on which country you live in ;)

Do you mean Canada vs. the US in terms of RF weight limit?

Yes, exactly!

It also depends on the torso height of the child - some kids DO outgrow a seat RF by height before weight. ;)

The seats are being installed in an 05 Escape. They are 18 months. They both weigh 22 pounds are 30 inches tall.

taking of the headrests should do the trick. I had to do that in my Tribute, which is a twin to the Escape.

At your kids' weight and age they are way less likely to be seriously injured or killed in an accident if they are rear facing. Here are some links to some information, if you're interested:

Please do consider leaving your twins RF longer, they would be safer, as mentioned.

Aside from that, which I will leave it to you to consider... I am not sure that the headrest pushing the seats forward and away from the vehicle seat is your issue? Are you perhaps asking if you can lift the base of the seat a bit at the back because you WANT the seats more upright? Maybe because your vehicle seat has a slant which is putting the MAs tilted backwards?

If that is what you mean, then unfortunately the answer is still no, you should not have the base lifted up (and I am not sure it would be possible to do so in any case, if you were to install tightly enough - the belt would tend to pull the seat back down. Please make sure however, that your seat is adjusted to the fully upright position (rearfacing it is installed fully reclined). If you have not made this change in recline then that would be why your seats seem too reclined.

ETA: if you already have the seats fully upright and still feel they are too reclined, you can try to push the base of the seats as far into the vehicle seat back as possible with your knees as you install so that the bottom of the back is pressed in more than the top - this would give you a similar positioning of the seat without putting a gap between the carseat and vehicle seat.
