When I tried AJ in his new FPSVD in the house to adjust the harness, he was a perfect fit in the second slot. I install it in my car after he goes to bed and when I put him in it this morning I was questioning if his shoulders were not above the slots slightly. It's close. I can get a pic when I pick him up. It just seems like the next slot would be really high above. I could try to install it more reclined (not in reclined mode though).

It is totally possible.
1) people shrink during the day and then stretch again over night. Something to do with gravity and spinal compression.
2) The fit on the floor vs installed in the vehicle can be VERY different, and I mean VERY.
If in doubt, move it up.

Kids usually do seem to lose a bit of room in the car vs in the house. if in doubt, move them up. It'll probably look too high for a couple weeks, but better too high than too low.
Installing it more reclined will make his shoulders even higher in relation to the slots. There's a nice illustration of that in the Britax convertible manuals.

Just because this is interesting:

Significant height decrease (>6 mm) occurred in volunteers during the course of a day while patients showed a significant increase (>5 mm) after lying supine for an average period of 49 min.
