Ok I really hope someone can help because I am so frustrated!! Its really hard for me to put this into words so please bare with me. I can take pics tomorrow if that helps.
Car: 2005 Chevy Venture

I have been able to get it installed great using the latch, in the second row, which is a captain chair.
My problem here is that when I am doing the top tether. It doesnt want to go over the top of the seat. It rolls off the side of it. Does that make sense??

Using belt:
I tried the long belt path. I think I was doing it wrong bc it was like if dd sat there it would be pushing her back. Looked at the pics in the book some more and tried it another way and the belt wasnt long enough!!
Tried the short belt and the buckle pushes into the side of the seat and wont tighten.

I would like to have a car seat tech show me how but from my experience with them around me, they may not be much help.

You may need to route the tether up and through the headrest, if it doesn't interfere with it too much... which I'm thinking it might. That can be a problem with captain's chairs and the V shaped tethers. There really is no sure fire way to fix it, unfortunately.

As for the belt install, have you reclined the vehicle seat all the way? This will give you a smidge more wiggle room with the length of the belt for LBP. It will also allow you to get a better position and tighter belt with SBP.

Try having someone else hold the belt for you. It really doesn't have to be all that long for LBP, but a lot of the time the problem is that it starts retracting in the middle and then you're stuck.

With my marathon I had the top tether go through the head rest and was told by a tech, when I went to a car seat check, that that was not allowed. I didnt have a problem with the tether slipping off the marathon.

When I was installing a car seat in my mom's corolla, I thought the manual said to put the tether between the head rest and seat. However, that was a long time ago. I don't have that type of problem because the protege's headrest do not move.

The top tether rolling off the side is fine, it's a versa tether (v-shaped) and comes from the sides of the carseat, so there is no way for it to go directly over the top of the head restraint.

I made detailed instructions with step by step pictures for the long belt path... maybe that will help?

Reclining the vehicle seat (as Splash said earlier) may allow you easy room to get enough belt... then once it's in, move the vehicle seat back upright.
