I've installed the base in the middle position in my Subaru using the seatbelt (no latch on this car) but the base still can flop up and down since the belt is only on one end of the base. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

As long as it's tight where the seatbelt goes through it (I'm assuming it's just a lap belt? Or is it a lap-shoulderbelt?), then you're fine. The fronts of infant bases are always wobbly and it's really disconcerting! There are installation videos here you can watch, and she shows how to check for tightness and where looseness is acceptable... http://www.carseatsite.com/videos.htm#rear-facing videos

Movement at the part of the base closest to the front of the car is normal. That being said, the plastic thingy in the center seat where you store the seat belt buckles when you are not using them makes a tight install of the Snugride base challenging.
The problem is the recline foot rests on the hard plastic thing and you can't compress the plastic, so you can't tighten the seat belt enough. What you'll need to do to solve this is put the recline foot in and use a fairly largish rolled towel (once it's rolled it should be fat enough to cover the plastic thingy) to get the recline instead. You'll probably have to twist the female end of the sat belt buckle to shorten it as well.

Thanks for your help. The towel seems to make it worse. The vertical movement is so great, the baby would definitely get whip-lash as it is. The seat practically flips up and hits the back of the seat. What is the "recline foot"??
