Can you use the following seat legally in the U.S? Inglesina model, Italian Made 2008, (rear
facing from 0-20lbs) FF from (20-40lbs)
This is being sold on my local craigslist and I asked the poster to contact our local safekids tech and the following is the response she recieved she said that from what i told her about the seat that it should be fine to use in the USA as long as its properly installed (as with all car seats). Its not been
recalled by nhsta and it meets the alabama state law guidelines that
she emailed me. I've also contacted Eddie Russell who is the local
Highway Safety Coordinator and was told that it meets the Alabama
state guidelines.
I was under the impression that you could not use forgein seats-I am wrong

I thought I read on here somewhere that there isn't really a federal law against it in the USA and that in some states it is technically not "illegal"... I am not 100% sure though.
ETA: I found the thread but it is in the technical forum... I am trying to find the Alabama state laws.... if you find them it would say something to the effect of "seat must be a federally approved restraint" or something like that.

Federal Supremacy in the United States would mean that you cannot use a non-FMVSS certified restraint in the United States, wouldn't it? If you are a visitor, you may use a foreign restraint. If it's not FMVSS certified, it's not legal to use as a US resident.
I'll have to go read that thread now in the tech forum now to see.

It's technically illegal to use a ECE R44 in US just as it is technically illegal to use a US FMVSS seat in Europe.
Both testing standards are similar and both are tough. There might be a small edge for the ECE R44 but it's hard to say. A correctly installed ECE seat would work just fine in US and be safe but it's still technically illegal.
There are quite a few who use the Swedish rear facing 55 lbs seats (ECE R44) even though these seats are also technically illegal but safer due to enabling rear facing far longer (usually until age 4 or 5)
In general, I would say that Italian and car seat safety should not be combined in one sentence if you know what I mean....

I e-mailed the seller all the information I have received, and it is still up for sale with the comments you will see. Maybe she will read things again and take it down. I already flagged it once for removal and it was re-posted already :(

idk that seat specifically, but "Italian made seats" are legal in USA, if they have the right approval. Peg and Chicco are both "made in Italy"but are legal to use in USA. There are a few which are approved for USA and ECE standards. Recaro comes to mind. Maybe they could be looking to sell it to someone moving to Italy? (really just looking for an excuse here)

I took for granted it was not certified FMVSS since she said Italian made and "complies with US laws and regulation".
Rear facing 0-20 lbs? Sure sounds like a seat made for Italy. Ouchhhhh!

like a group 0+ & 1 combo is what I thought, but I think they sometimes go rfing 0-13kg (not always, bc sometimes it is 0-9) and then 9-18kg ffing
