When you install a MA FF in the recline mode is the back of the seat flush with the vehicle seat back?
Mine barely touches, its rock solid but there is not a lot of contact with the seat back. If I put it in upright mode it has great contact so I wasn't sure if this was ok.

Does it say that you can use it reclined while FF in the manual?

The Marathon can only be used in the recline mode up to 33 lbs in FFing mode. Really, though, it is always best to have your seat more upright if possible.

Why are you reclining FF?

Pretty much everyone on this site will agree that a child under the weight and height limits for RFing should be RFing. A child who is over the height limit will most likely be close to the 33 pound limit to have the seat in recline mode FFing. And reclining while FFing increases loads on the hips and spine, so is not generally recommended.

A seat is outgrown RFing when the weight limit is reached, or when there is less than one inch of hard plastic shell above the child's head, whichever comes first.

Since the details have been covered, I'll just answer the original question (the details were very important ones, though.)

Yes, even with the MA FF in recline mode, the back of the MA shell should be in contact with the back of the vehicle seat. And yes, depending on the vehicle in question, doing this can pretty much make the recline mode useless.

DD is 4.5y and 30.5 lbs. so I have her FF. I just installed it upright and she seemed fine and even napped w/ no head slump so since it is safer I will just leave it that way. Thanks for all the info!
