View Full Version : How to fit three kids into a Civic!

I just found out I am pregnant with my third child. While I am overjoyed by the news, I drive a civic and am wondering if there is any way I will be able to fit all three in there without compromising their safety. Currently my son is in a Marathon, he weighs just under 40 pounds. My daughter is in a Roundabout, and she weighs about 28 pounds. I would like to keep them in Britax seats, because they are the top of the line. And I was looking into getting a companion for the new baby. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. I do have some time to figure this whole thing out, just getting ideas. Thanks!

While Britax seats are nice, I really don't think you can get three across with them in the Civic. You might be able to use one of them, maybe the Roundabout, but you will most likely need at least one Sunshine Kids Radian, as they are really narrow. I had one and I think the quality is as good as Britax. As for the Companion, it's not my favorite infant seat. I think it's really overpriced for the amount of use you get and you must use it with the inflatable headrest, which can be very confining for some kids. I would probably look into Radians for the older two and possibly the Chicco Keyfit 30 for an infant seat. I feel the Chicco is a superior infant seat to the Companion, in terms of ease of use and yes, even quality(the Companion is nearly $200 and has a one piece chest clip!). You may need to try some things out, to see what fits.

I believe the BabyTrend seat is the narrowest infant seat.

I haven't tried 3 FF Radians yet, but will need to find out if this works, or I may have to drive another vehicle when the RF child reaches 33 lbs ( hopefully not too soon)

I also got FF MA/FF Radian/RF Radian to work until I got the 3rd Radian last month. I like how nice the 3 Radians look all together."

Ahh and then I found this post that already has some of those plus more listed:

No pictures yet but today I got.

2 FF Radians outboard
safeseat with base center

all with seatbelt, all independant installs (I was able to take base out with Radians still tight)
Tricks: recline the FF Radians, install safeseat base first

Here's (http://car-seat.org/showpost.php?p=477785&postcount=133) a RF Graco Snugride, FF Britax Boulevard, FF Sunshine Kids Radian

Here's (http://car-seat.org/showpost.php?p=382786&postcount=76) a FF Marathon/FF Radian/RF Radian

You can search the entire Successful Three Across thread (http://car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=33226&highlight=civic) for Civic solutions by clicking the Search This Thread button under the page numbers at the top.

Hope this helps!

Thank you guys so much! I may as well be a tech seeing as how much of a Nazi I am when it comes to car seats. To the first responder... I actually already have looked into getting a Chicco Key Fit instead of the Companion, because I have read a lot of reviews saying it is better, but thanks for reassuring me again! :)

I haven't heard much about the Radian, but I'm definitely going to be looking into them! Especially after seeing the picture of the three kids in the 01 two door civic!

Thanks again!

Definitely check out the three-across thread. :) I have a 2006 Civic and have had many, many successful installations with three-across. :)

One thing to note as you look at the successful 3-across thread... The backseat in the Civic was changed recently, in '06 I believe. Prior to that it was smaller than the new ones. So the successful 06-08s may not work in your older Civic.

We have an '04 Civic and currently have Parkway/RF Radian/FF Radian. We have a SnugRide, but there was no way that it would fit in there with the Parkway and Radian. Your "easiest" solution, IMO, would be to go with all 3 in Radians.

Since it looks like you will have two RFing (just based on your DD's weight, you didn't say if she's RFing or FFing) I'll mention this. I have an 02 Civic, 4 door. Radian is RFing center, but it can't go outboard because it is so tall and you can't really install it more upright (at least not enough to make a difference in this situation).

But the Radian puzzles really well with the Marathon for sure (I don't know about the Roundabout) when they are both facing the same direction. So try RFing Marathon, RFing Radian, and then whatever you get for your DS. When your DD turns FFing, you can put DD in the MA still, DS in the RN, and baby in ?? whatever you find that fits. Maybe the Roundabout.

Maybe I missed it, I tried to find the year of your Civic. What year? What you can do will depend a lot on whether its a new body style (2000 and newer) or older body style. I have a '99 - and while the Radian could physically fit 3 across, it was a moot point b/c the radian was incompatible with my '99 Civic. Wouldn't install acceptably in any seating position.
