...DH and I were leaving Target. We were parked next to a car that had an infant carrier in the back, installed forward facing - and get this - the installation consisted of the seatbelt wrapped around the raised handle. That was it.

So we hung around.

Finally, an older gentleman and a baby exit the store, and DH goes up to talk to them (there were only about 7 other cars in the parking lot at this time since the store was closed, so the guy thought DH wanted some money.) DH introduces himself, says he's a paramedic and he's concerned about the installation of the carseat, that he'd like to show him how to install it properly and told him that the baby was at risk of ejection in an accident.

Guy tells DH that he knows the baby has outgrown the seat - baby is 18 months old - but he's "just" his grandson and Mom has the real seat in her car, and they weren't going far so they used the infant carrier.

Again, DH asks if he can show him how to install the seat correctly, and tells him that even though the baby is too big for the seat, it isn't meant to be FFacing at all and in an accident the handle will tear off, etc....

Guy says he'll go ahead and turn the seat around, so he takes out baby, puts him in the front seat, and starts switching around the seat. At this point he "thanked" DH and said he'd take care of it....

...so we left. I wonder if he even knows HOW to install the seat RFacing - I wonder if he'll just wrap the seatbelt around it somehow that way, too?

Gee. :(

At least DH hopes he got him thinking.

Wow, at least you guys tried. I saw a baby (like a few wks old) w/out a carseat before Christmas at Wal-Mart, they just drove off holding him. :( They were gone before I could even compose myself to have said anything.

I can imagine the scenerio. Mom and Dad are having a night out, grandpa says he'll stay at their house with the baby. The outgrown infant seat is in the garage. Grandpa decides he "needs" something at Target that can't wait. And there they are!

Glad your husband called him on it. The parents will probably never know.
