I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has no LATCH. In the back seat I have two lap/shoulder belts and one lap belt. The center position is narrower than the two outboard positions. Our current seat is an Evenflo Triumph and it fits perfectly. The new seat is a Britax Frontier.

We have spent the last 30 min outside trying to install the Frontier. I want it in the center position. I have a lap belt there. We are using the short belt path. My husband can get it tight, but the seat and the recline bar hang on the vehicle seat. That means the recline block, which is on a spring, is floppy. Plus, the Frontier's seat back is not flush against the car's seat back. I can also loosen the whole seat easily. This was not the case with the Triumph. Why can I loosen the Frontier?

Just for kicks I tried it in an outboard position. I cannot even attempt installation there. The car's head rest prevents the Frontier's seat back from sitting flush against the car's seat back. There is no way that I can tell to remove the head rest. The car's manual does not say it can be removed.

I do not want this seat in an outboard position anyway. If it cannot fit in the center then it will go back to the BX. We got a great deal on it ($100 off) so I would like to keep it if possible.

Try flipping the latch plate 180 degrees. that may help with the loosening. Also, when installing, push the seat back, with your legs, then down.

What do you mean by latch plate? You mean the latch for the seat belt? I don't think it would latch if I flipped it around. I cannot turn the part that it hooks into. It is bolted to the car and does not move. I already tried. I have tried pushing the seat back while my husband pushes it down and tighens the seat. So far the only thing that works is the LBP, but you cannot use it with a lap belt. Does anyone know why??

The latch plate in the thing that is attached to the lap belt.

Flip the latch plate around a FULL turn and it will buckle, not half of a turn.
