I just got done reading the current Safe Ride News, and it pointed out that GM no longer allows borrowing outboard LATCH anchors for use in the center seating position. (GM previously deferred to the child restraint instructions.) This change is RETROACTIVE.

This does not pertain to cars with dedicated center anchors--just borrowing. The new information will be listed in the 2009 LATCH Manual.

(Sorry if this was posted before. I hadn't seen it, and a quick search didn't bring it up.)

Man, the credit crisis has reached new lows, GMAC isn't even loaning LATCH anchors.

What vehicles allowed the borrowing to begin with? All the GM's that I have seen have had 3 sets of LATCH anchors or had dedicated anchors for the center. Or it said in the manual that LATCH was only in the outboard positions.

Basically any GM model without dedicated center anchors (there are a lot) allowed it if the child restraint manufacturer did, too. According to Safe Ride News, the issue wasn't addressed in the vehicle manuals, but was allowed per the LATCH Manual.

The nice thing is that a lot of GM cars DO have dedicated anchors in the middle, but it was a nice perk to be able to use non-dedicated anchors, too.

Your right a lot of GM vehicles do have center anchors so that is a good thing. To be honest even though the LATCH manual says you can do the borrowing on some vehicle I still follow the vehicles owners manual if I am working with a family. My reasoning is if I go against the owners manual the parents will then think "Well the tech didn't follow the vehicles owners manual then why do we have to follow these rules." So, It's a double standard so to speak.

Now if it was in my vehicle that is another thing. My GM vehicle (Pontiac G8) has 3 sets of anchors but doesn't matter since my girls are over the LATCH weight limit anyways.
