I need one :)
Actually my sister needs one, but im buying it. Money is not an issue. She is a small person 5'3 and 105lbs.... but dad is 6' so im not sure what size baby will be.
I was thinking of this,
http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B001I04XMM/sr=1-4/qid=1229961606/ref=sr_1_4/179-7975898-3805669?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=397738011
incase baby is on the smaller side. But was also thinking since baby will be born in August... will this get baby through the winter. Im also buying them a MA for after baby outgrows the infant seat.
I need info on infant seats, since i havent bought one in 4 yrs. Thanks.

The Graco SafeSeat (http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=2688723&cp=2582967.2582971.2582971&parentPage=family) goes up to 30 lbs and is easy to install. It has a built in lockoff as well.
The Keyfit is nice, but Canada doesn't have the Keyfit 30 like the US does.
You may also want to look into the Compass True Fit over the Britax Marathon.

I second the graco safeseat. I have one, and I love love love it! My 8.5 month, 23 pound son has lots of room left to grow..............and it's super easy to install, especially with the lock off.........
I'd highly recommend it!

I thought the Graco seats were not so great for little babies? I dont knowq that she will have a little baby, but if she does, I want the seat to fit correctly.
I tried a TrueFit and did not like it. I have an MA and much prefer that. She has also used my MA and knows how to install them, thats why I was going that route.

I just mentioned it because I was under the impression that MAs only RF to 30 lbs in Canada.

I love the convenience of having an infant seat, being able to either leave the seat in the vehicle or take babe out with the seat if he is sleeping or it is really cold etc.
And unless you want a RFing seat that goes to 35lbs (and my understanding is that the true fit is the only one in canada that does), the rest go rfing to 30lbs anyway, which is another reason that the safeseat is a good option..

For infant seat, Graco SnugRide is good for the one that goes to 20 lbs and reasonable cost. Graco SafeSeat is good for a choice to have an infant seat (and the portability if one wishes) with limit of 30 lbs and still a reasonable price but can last to approx. 18 mos or more for a baby.
KeyFit in Canada goes only to 22 lbs (I think 22 lbs and not 20 lbs) and is much more expensive. The same for the Peg Perego and Maxi Cosi Mico.
Others are not as great for various reasons (ie. ease of installation, features, longevity, etc.)
I probably go with the SafeSeat and by the time he/she outgrows the SafeSeat, we should have more convertible with rf limit to 35 lbs, other than the current TF.

I just got mine about 2 weeks ago. I love it! I think there's a good chance it could get baby through winter. It is bigger than a snugride, but smaller than a safeseat. So for me, it's perfect! I bought it from tummiestotots.com cause they have it for $199, free shipping.

Graco SnugRide goes to 22 pounds now - has for a year or two. There might be some old stock out there....

I think it's a great idea to get a safeseat. I had to get rid of our safety first designer 22 a few months ago as my son had reached the height/weight limit. I like that our safeseat is nice and deep, I don't actually know how much "bigger" it is than another infant seat.
I have a good friend who used a safeseat for her preemie daughter, I believe she weighed under 6 pounds....................
I'll edit this once I find out for sure!

Just thought I'd address your "getting through the winter" question. We have a 22 lb limit Snugride. My son was born in May at 9 lb 6 oz. and has always been well above average weight and very tall. He lasted in the Snugride until he was 10 months old (tail end of winter), so I'd think anything other than a really huge baby should get through the winter in a 22 lb seat no problem if born in August.

My dd was born on August 19 at 8.10lbs.
I am 5'5 and dh is 5'7
She would have outgrown a 22lb seat at 4 months
We bought the safe seat and it lasted until a couple weeks ago and she probably could still ride in it at 16 months. She is now 28.2lbs

It obviously depends on the proportions of the baby. My friend recently had a full-term baby girl who was on the small size, 6lb and a few oz, and she did not fit in the SS1 at first. I believe she had almost an inch to go to reach the bottom slots! So having a backup choice might be a good idea. That being said, I love my SS1 and my 7lb 10oz baby fit great (needed a rolled receiving blanket in the crotch to fill out the gap).
ETA we are both fairly short, as well, I am 5'2" and DH is not a tall guy, but my first son was 9 lb and over 21 inches, so tops of the charts for both length and weight. Parents' sizes only have so much to do with birth weight.

I'm surprised that if your son was above average height that he fit in the snugride for so long. We had a snugride for DS1 and DD. DS1 was 9lbs 13oz and 23 inches long at birth - he outgrew our 20lb, 26in snugride by height at 3 1/2 months. (He was also 18.5 lbs, so not far off in weight.) DD is on the small side (below average in height (15%) and weight (30%)) and she outgrew the snugride by height by 8 months.
This time around we bought a safeseat to use with DS2. I wanted to make sure it would last through the winter. DS2 is almost 4 months old, 18lbs, and 26 inches - so our snugride would not have lasted. He still has plenty of room in the safeseat.
I was actually surprised at how large the seat is - my DD who is now 2 would still fit in it using the 1 inch of hard shell rule. I'm hoping this means my DS will actually last until spring/summer!

I'd say go with the Keyfit since it rocks and fits small babies well and then get a True Fit down the road which RF's to 35 pounds.

The 22 lb Snugride goes to 29", so that is a fair bit more height than the older model. Plus I think he is more legs than torso. He has always been at least 97th percentile for height, and by the point he outgrew it he was 75th for weight.

You are right, an extra 3 inches in the seat and a leggy child make all the difference! My DS is all torso, so that definately added to the seat being outgrown quickly.

You've been given great advice on the infant seats. Something else to think about though, the 10 year old in your siggy picture doesn't look like she has enough head support (eye level). It might just be the angle of the photo, but I just wanted to mention it.

We are no longer in that car. She never sat in that spot.... she was usually outboard, that was a trial pic to see if she had enough support, she didnt so we went back to her outboard. I just love the pic... its so my kids LOL.

Ahh, good to know. It IS an adorable photo. If I can offer some advice though, putting a caption along the lines of "discovering DD is to tall for the center seat" will keep us helpful folks from mentioning it upteen thousand times.
