So we were at my in laws yesterday and we were looking through pictures and I found a few of my DH when he was in his infant car seat. He was born in Decemeber of 1981. My MIL said that it just had a strap that went between their legs and around their waist, looked like the ones in high chairs now. Then they buckled the seatbelt over the carseat. She said that they never got into an accident.. but still, that's crazy. I can't believe how far we have come!!

That's crazy! I'll have to see if my mom can dig up pictures of my car seat, I was also born in Dec of 1981.

Here is my carseat in 87.. It's crazy how they didn't do anything different between 81 and 87. Or maybe my mom just bought an older carseat?

that is so they can fit four or 5 kids in the back seat of the car. Sharing seatbelts of course.

Hmm...When I go to my parents' house on Thursday, I'll have to see if nay of our baby pics include a carseat :) I was a July 81 baby.

I have a pic of me in a seat like that and I was born in 82'...but I asked my mom about it(on the phone with her now) and she said that she just put it in the car(not seatbelt). Yup, she still doesnt' care about carseat saftey.
I also had a brown metal vinyl carseat when I was 6 months (FF).

It is amazing we are here to tell the stories (or hear them rather)... shocking! I think my mom said she had a seat for me but often she just held me

A few years ago, I happened to flip by "Raising Arizona" (1987) on cable. It jus happened to be the scene where John Goodman and Nicholas Cage were stealing the baby, and they were carrying him around in his infant seat. I gasped at how flimsy it looked! It definitely did not have a 5 pt harness... maybe a 3 pt.

IMDB won't let me copy and paste the pic, but here's a still of the baby and infant seat:

If I'm right, that isn't even a car seat. I believe it's only a carrier?

I dunno but they used it as a carseat! lol I had the same one. But I haven't talked to my mom to ask her if it was my carseat, I just assumed.

I believe I have one in the collection and all it has is a vinyl strap around the waist to hold the baby in!

Yup. It just looks like the kind of straps high chairs have. There were some other car seat pics that showed it, not buckled but pokin out the side, but I forgot to grab them. So do you really think it's a carrier only? Good thing they were never in an accident!

Yep, it's got to be a carrier. I'll have to dig mine out to show you. I'm positive. I never posted it here because it wasn't a car seat.

My DH's mom is pretty sure they used that at a carseat when they were really little. Good thing they were never in an accident! My mom said that she is pretty sure she had a carrier and a car seat.

Yep, you're right. My mom & dad had one that they used for all 4 of us (born in '77, '79, '84 and '86), but it was just a carrier and they also used it in the house, just as a little seat. BUT, they had a completely separate car seat, similar to that one in Raising Arizona. It had a black vinyl seat and a harness. For my youngest brother, born in '86, they finally bought him a new car seat that I remember specifically... it had a maroon cover and an OHS.

My MIL says that they never even knew car seats existed when DH was a baby. My mom can't believe that. She says they must have just had their heads under a rock because she knew about car seats and insisted on using them. She must have been one of the first CPS advocates ever!

Many many people still have their heads under the same rock! After all these years.... :)

I find it hilarious that they have the babies labeled and they're so obviously not identical. :ROTFLMAO:

You're right...crash testing standards went into effect in 81 so they would have had a proper harness by then

And get this...a grandfather came in to Babies R Us the other day looking for a 'baby carrier' for his dd and grandbaby, and described one of these things... I told him they really don't make them anymore (except for one 'travel system' dealy thing on a discount site I've seen recently) since so many people used them as carseats. He just wanted something lighter than a carseat for toting the baby around in stores and stuff....

Anyway, great pics Blondie, thanks for sharing!

In 1987 I was 5, and riding in a white hard plastic no back booster that looked like a Bumbo seat and hurt my legs so bad. Sounds like I was doing better than most kids my age back then!

Yeah, I don't remember any 5 year old riding in a booster back then. Most didn't even use a seat belt.

I remember my little brother sleeping in the back of our station wagon on long trips. It looked just like a full size bed back there. Scary, especially since my Dad is a horrible driver.

Here is me in 1981 in the Graco Century Infant Love Seat. This thing looks like a dang piece of Tupperware with some vinyl padding.

Cute flashback photo! :) Bookmama and I worked a seat check last summer where one of those Love Seats arrived in use with a baby in it. Not in our lane, but we saw the Love Seat after it was surrendered for disposal and replaced with a new carseat. It was in surprisingly good condition considering it was "vintage."

OMG! I had one of those carriers for my oldest in 1990! She actually had a really nice, plush Fisher Price seat with a canopy/hood. It didn't have a handle on it though.
And in 1987, I had my DL already for 7 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang it, I AM old!
