View Full Version : Help me help someone give up their Mighty Tight!

I'm corresponding with someone who is having issues getting her seats (an Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 rf'ing and a Nautilus) in without the use of a Mighty Tight.

She has a 2001 Jeep Cherokee. Does anyone know what type of seat belts this car has? If she has locking seat belts, I'm pretty sure I can walk her through installing them. If they don't, I'm lost.

I think she's receptive to not using the MT's, but it's stressful to give up something you've relied on for so long.

Thank you SO much!

Bumping this up in hopes that someone might know how the seatbelts are setup in this vehicle.

Has this person tried taking the base off of the 3-in-1 seat? I have heard that can often help with installing it. Since she is used to the install tightness of the mighty tight, a normal, good install may not feel adequate to her. As long as the seat is not moving more then 1" in any direction at the belt path, then it should be considered a good install.

they lock... Jeep is Dodge, so they SHOULD (not sure which year they finished switching) have lightweight locking latchplates.

But if they don't... every vehicle after 95 is required to have locking seatbelts, so they would lock at the shoulder.

with lightweight locking latchplates, it locks the lap, but not the shoulder... and does it as you pull... so they may just not realize they are locking.

Her belts lock at the latchplate. Have her take the base off, pull the belt to tighten, and voila. She might need noodles or a rolled towel for the angle.

The MT needs to come out, yesterday. It can stretch out and seriously damage her belts.

Here's a great link explaining the issues with using a Mighty Tite:

And just tossing in another link because it's an excellent primer on various types of vehicle seatbelts and how they lock:

Yep, she has locking latchplates. She'll need to remove the base for the AO, and tell her to pull the shoulder portion of the belt parallel to the lap portion rather than pulling up. She can also flip the male end of the buckle one half-turn (180*) before rebuckling.

I have a Nauti in my mom's 01 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is the easiest seat I've ever installed in her car. The rf seats use to give me trouble in her car until I had some practice. I would guess she's just use to the Mighty Tite and worried about change. Good luck.
