state that child restraints cannot be installed next to side air bags? We are taught to check for this but so far I have not come across a vehicle manual that stated this and neither has the CPST-I who taught my class and runs our seat distribution program.

I have a parent asking me about this - obviously checking her owner's manual will do it for her but I was just curious if anyone actually has seen a vehicle with this stipulation.

Edit: I thought my old BMW did, but after thinking about it, I seem to remember it saying to not let children rest against the sides. The danger is the airbag going off against the head of a sleeping child. Don't recall anything about not putting car seats there.

I don't know of specific models off hand, either, but Darren happened to post some helpful info. about how you can check on specific vehicle models at safercar.gov in another side airbag related thread today at

I have never seen one that does, but I have seen car manuals that say do not put a child restraint next to the SIAB if the child restraint prohibits it. I had a car, I think an '01 Beemer, that said that last Saturday.
