This is a map of the US of right now. Those airplane images are not just flights in the air, those are airplane incidents that have happened today. Most are small planes, most haven't resulted in injuries, but boy, a lot sure have happened today. I clicked in about five of them. One landed in a railway yard, no injuries. One ran off the runway, no injuries. One landed in a wooded area off of RI, three dead. One international jet hit severe turbulance, one seriously injured. One had nose gear fail on landing, no injuries.
Here's the site. http://visz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/usa_alert.php?lang=eng It's a neat site. There's a world one, too. http://visz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/woalert.php?lang=eng For some reason it doesn't show the airplane crash in Russia today that killed 200 people (man, bad week to make the argument that nothing happens on planes).
Everyone can decide for themselves how they would like to protect their children. I do know people who don't leave the house at a whisper of a cold, or who carry around cleanser and continuously debacterialize their children. There are those who insist on rearfacing for their nearly four year olds. I know a ton of people who don't eat non-organic food, or processed foods, or whose childrens are vegetarian by their parents' choice. People do different things. And people can advise one way or another, but to tell someone to do something less safe, that's just wrong. A friend of mine tells me I need to let Piper live a little and maybe go in an RV (recreational vehicle, I think they're called caravans in the UK) without a carseat. It's not worth the risk to me. My friend can tell me that, but she knows I won't, and I'm not offended she mentioned it once. But I would be if she mentioned it over and over and over and over again. If she wants to take her daughter in one, fine, that's her choice, but it's not mine. We respect each others' decisions, though I think she's insane and she thinks I'm insane. :-)
