View Full Version : Got the Pink Nautilus!

I took the plunge and bought the Mariposa Nautilus,
even though my granddaughter is 7 1/2 and 42 lbs.
She is finally definitely too big for the MA.
She is in a TurboBooster in her mom's car, Radian in dad's truck,
TB in dad's girlfriend's car (and watching her buckle herself in was a nightmare  ) and Naulilus in grandpa's truck.
I was wondering how she would react when she saw it,
because she had asked me to get her a booster.
I picked her up from school and
watched her reaction when I opened the back door.
At first, she said, "Yeah, a booster!"
Then she climbed in.
I held my breath as to what she would say when she saw the harness.
She didn't skip a beat, just buckled in as usual.
Then she said 'It's about time you got me a pink seat!"
I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing!
Now normally I would have chastised her for being mouthy, but...
I was so thrilled she was OK with a harnessed seat that I overlooked
the sarcasm!

You know, one thing I really love about the Nautilus (for bigger kids - say 5+) is that it really LOOKS like a booster. You can't even tell that it's a harnessed seat unless you're up close. Helps minimize the possibility of peer pressure. (At least for my DS, since we almost never have other kids actually in the car with us. And they can't tell from a distance that DS is in a harnessed seat.)

I agree..... the Nautilus (and Frontier) are definitely not little kid seats and they don't look like them.
They look like boosters and, because they do function as boosters, kids know they are for big kids.
I'm glad she loves it.

The nautilus comes in pink? When did that happen? Do you have a link to a pic?

I was thinking the same thing and I know my 5 year old doesn't fit in one.

It's a rare 5-year-old who doesn't fit in a Nautilus. How tall is your child, how much does she weigh, and what is her torso height?

I agree.. My daughter is at the top end of the charts for height AND has a long torso. She'll be 5 in March and I expect her to last until age 6, but hopefully longer.

please tell me you are talking about the Ma she just outgrew and not a nautilus? Because it's making my head hurt trying to think about a 5 year old who wouldn't fit in a nauti.??.......

yes, this!!!!! It really does just look like a turbobooster. The teachers at dd's school still sometimes try to buckle her in with the seatbelt...LOL.

I think by the time my 2 year old is 5 she probably won't fit in a Nauti. At 2 1/2 she uses the top slots on her Radian...

Great to know that she liked her seat, tjham. The Nauti really doesn't look like a baby seat at all, which is so great. Hopefully a lot of people will keep their children harnessed longer because of that.

I honestly don't think that my son will fir in the Nautilus at 5. Maybe, but I wouldn't count on it. At 2, he's using the top slots on his MA and TF and the third (of four, as you know) slots on the Nautilus.

I'm betting DD won't last until 5 in her Nauti. She's on the top slots now at 3.5.

There will always be kids on both ends of the curve -- my daughter, who is on the second from top set of slots at 6y9m, will probably fit in the harness past her eighth birthday. I don't think it's inaccurate, though, to say that *most* 5-year-olds would be able to use the seat.

Oh I agree, I would think most 5-6-7 year olds would fit!

Ok, so what is it that would make a 5 year old outgrow it? Is it the height? I was sorta considering the Mariposa Nauti for my parents car to drive my dd in occasionally (I did NOT want to fork out the cash for a 3rd Frontier), but my dd is REALLY tall. She's like 43" & all legs & just turned 4 last week. I'm thinking the Nauti might not be a good option, then. Thoughts?

My granddaughter is all legs too, and short torso, that's why she still fits so well. She just barely outgrew the MA.
What seat is your daughter in now?

I shudder to think when my youngest is going to outgrow her seat. I forsee a RSTV in her future because I have an inkling that's the ONLY way she'll be able to stay harnessed past 2 or 3 (considering she has a 15 inch torso at 7 months.) I am so, so envious of all of you with short- to normal-torsoed kids.

The Nauti harness fits a bit longer by height than the Frontier, so if she has growing room in the Frontier, she has room in the Nautilus.
With tall & thin kids people are talking about outgrowing the seat by height when the shoulders go above the top harness slot.
Ketchupqueen - My ds's torso wasn't that tall, but it was tall... he kept growing torso and had short little legs. Everyone told me his legs would catch up but I didn't believe them. Guess what? They have caught up. I know that Scatterbunny's dd had a super tall torso too and then it hardly grew at all for quite awhile and all her height growth was in her legs. Might seem hard to believe now, but your dd will grow some legs. I'm sure you're right that she'll outgrow seats much sooner than other kids, but perhaps not quite as early as you predict.

Well, unfortunately she is not that different in proportions from me. While I'm sure eventually her torso growth will slow, I'm not convinced it will slow before she hits 20 inches and outgrows the Regent...

 I totally forgot about the height coming from legs, not torso. She went well over the height guidelines with her old Triumph because she is all legs...which would make it possible to get more time out of a Nauti.
Oh, she's in a Frontier & has TONS...I mean TONS of room left. I just don't want to pay for another Frontier (we have 2) to put in my parents car. I mean, she's never had a seat in their car, but her preschool is about 5 mins away from their house, so I kinda want one in there as a back up.

I'm short torsoed and all five of my kids have inherited it. My 4th child is super slim and short as well. I forsee her fitting the nautilus at age 11 or 12, but I would never say that most kids could fit at that age. My ds is 5.5 and on the second from the top slots. I've decided he can move to a booster at 7 years. I just don't see any reason why we have to harness to the limit of the seat if he can sit in a booster well. My oldest dd was actually a bit bigger than the fourth at that age. Oldest is now 9 years old and has over an inch before outgrowing the nautilus, but I see no reason to make her return to a harness when she sits fine in a booster.

The Nautilus is approximately 0.25" taller than the Frontier, so if she has "tons" of room in the Frontier, she'll have tons plus a teeny bit more in the Nautilus.

Right, but isn't there an issue with the crotch strap, esp. on long legged kids?

My feeling on the crotch strap is that it's more of an issue with boys and children in diapers. My brother, although he isn't sitting ON the strap, with a pull up on he is pushing against the strap. And he is skinny! But my cousin's baby girl, who is almost 5, out of diapers and bigger than him weight wise, has plenty of room in the crotch strap.

those kids must be all torso or they are just off the chart in height... cause even Damian (off the charts now for height) lasted in the Regent until 6.5yrs old... he would have made it to at least 6 in this seat (he had a spurt when he started first grade... shot up a good 6" in two months... so he outgrew the Marathon around age 6, too... it was a really shocking spurt)
Hopefully they will all just grow leg.

DS is six years old and 46.25 inches tall. He still has one more harness slot to go on the Nautilus. Funny thing is, his torso was too tall for the Marathon at 4 years old.
