letting your dd who is 8.5 y/o, 49 inches and weighs 50lbs ride in a backless booster?
DD is complaining because she is still in a hb booster and kids her age in Au are not in anything, so she wants me to take the back off.

I think Dana's Emily just moved to an Olli b/c of that same issue. It's so hard, you want to keep them as safe as possible but not discount their feelings as well. Do you driver her to school? Maybe it's a matter of lbb (or nbb for those who hate lbb, lol) to and from school and hbb everywhere else, or lbb when she has friends w/ her etc? Maybe pull out the crash videos? Those ones are kind of tough though and you don't want to scare her too much.

I drive her to school, no hwy just back roads and it takes about 10 min. I may try that, just to school and back and w/ friends and for longer trips more than a 1/2 hr then w/ the back.
It is getting harder now since she is going w/ friends who are not in anything.
I have showed her the videos but I may need to refresh her.

If I had curtain airbags, yeah, I'd be fine with it. Or if it's in the center. But no airbags? I'd really feel uncomfortable with it...I still have my kids in HBB's in our van that has no curtains....they are 11 and 9 and don't complain :)

No airbags:(, but I would put her in the middle.
The car seat laws really suck here! I was hoping that they would finally pass the law that they had to use a booster till 7 y/o, but I don't think they did.
I would be comfortable with it.

I'm like Julie; outboard seating position and/or no side airbags, I'd want a highback until she doesn't fit anymore, but if she'll be in the middle seating position, I'd be okay with a backless, and I especially love the idea of continuing to use a highback on longer trips.

I let my 43lb 8yo ride in a backless in my mom's vehicles. She has to ride outboard, though, because there aren't any center headrests.
I should add that if I know in advance that they'll be going somewhere, I leave a HBB, but sometimes something comes up and my mom wants to go somewhere, so she just puts her in the backless.
