I have 2 boys, 8 and 3. I have been driving a 1995 volvo 940T wagon since, well, 1995. We need a car that seats 6 to transport boys to and fro, around town. My husband refuses to drive a minivan. I also need 3 rows, to separate my boys for my sanity--a huge priority. So far, based on your site and one other, the Honda Pilot seems the best bet for 3rd row safety. Does anyone know about the Ford Freestyle for 3rd row safety, or any other options? I just want to make sure I am not missing anything..3 rows, child safety are my only considerations.

FYI--Your site recommends the Acura MDX as well, but when you look at the IIHS site, they rate it as poor for rear crashes. Thanks!!

The Freestyle is a very good choice.

Don't pay too much attention to IIHS rear crash safety ratings. It isn't actually a crash test in the normal sense. What they do is put one or more vehicle seats on a test sled and simulate a crash. Basically, it is a test of head restraint and seat back design for reducing whiplash injuries. In addition, they only test an average size male dummy at an average seat back recline and head restraint adjustment. In some vehicles, they only test certain seating positions on some trim levels. If you vary in size, sit in a different position or carefully adjust your seats, the tests may not apply to you. Also, the tests don't apply at all to children in harnessed child seats or high back boosters. The shells of these models provide the whiplash protection, not the seat or head restraint in the vehicle.

It is a reasonable test for what it is. In my opinion, it is not as important as the other IIHS and NHTSA crash tests.

What about a Volvo XC90, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander (with 3rd row option) or a Chrysler Pacifica? The Subaru B9 Tribeca is also promising.
