View Full Version : Safe proximity to airbag?

How close can the driver and passenger seats be to the dashboard/airbags? We want to get a Boulevard, but just tested it in the car today, and we had to move the passenger seat forward a bit. It's not all the way forward, just more squished than I'm used to. And I wondered about the safety aspect.
Thanks to all of you techs and others for your willingness to answer all these questions.

There should be 10-12+ inches between person & airbag....
How far reclined was the carseat? How old is the child?
Infants require 45-degree recline angle, but after infancy it can be more upright :)

We are intending it for my 7 mo old son, who is developmentally delayed. So probably it should be all the way reclined. My toddler is rf behind the driver's seat, in an Evenflo Triumph. DH didn't try the blvd in the center position next to the Triumph, but doesn't seem like it would fit there.

What vehicle year, make & model? It might work, depending on the vehicle :)
I'm not sure if your son would need the full recline angle -- it's necessary for infant because otherwise the airway can get blocked off, but I don't know specifics for developmental delays ... perhaps another CPSTech can provide some insight into that  :o

what exactly are your son's delays? The full angle is necessary to prevent a newborn's head from slumping forward. If your on is capable of holding his head up unassisted, it can be a little more upright.

It's a 2002 Accord. I didn't actually measure, but sitting in the passenger seat, it looks like I have much more than 12" between me and the dashboard.
My son can't sit unassisted, although his head control when held upright is improving. He does get a little floppy when tired. I'd estimate him to be about the level of a 3-4 mo old, not a total newborn.

I would say it can be a *little* more upright, but not as much as for an older baby.
