View Full Version : Question Can the EZ On Tether Kit be used in a 2002 Grand Cherokee?

I was searching to see if a retrofit was available for a center TA in my 2002 Grand Cherokee. Apparently there are none for Grand Cherokees made after 2000 (yes, I know LATCH is required on later vehicles, but the ones made from 2001-02 fall through the cracks). I find this odd because my car is the same body model as the 2000 Grand Cherokees. Anyway, since there isn't one available I came across the E-Z On Tether Kit in my search. In fact I even read a post here about it being used in an older Grand Cherokee. So, can it be used in mine? How would I know where to install it?

Here are the installation instructions (http://www.ezonpro.com/instructions/EZONinstructions_familyVehicle_86y.pdf) for the EZ-On tether anchor; they're at the bottom of the page.

You must be able to access the other side of an area of "solid flat sheet metal," that is no more than 20 degrees off-center of the seating location, with an angle of 45 degrees (or smaller).

If you've got a suitable location, it's still not exactly an easy job unless you're already handy with tools.

But it would pass and be safe? My ultimate goal is to get a center TA for the Jeep. My new thought is to find out what body style the 2003 and 2004 Grand Cherokees are. I know the 2000-02 models are a WJ. If the 2003 or 2004 model is a WJ as well AND it has a center TA then it should be able to be installed in my 2002 Grand Cherokee because mine should be the same structurally if it is the same body style. At least that is what the Jeep dealership says. It is Sunday so I cannot call to ask about the body style.

If it is installed according to EZ-On's instructions, then we can assume it is "safe," in the same way that we can assume our carseats are safe when installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. That's not a guarantee, of course, but then nothing is.
