I recently turned my Evenflo Triumph Advanced convertible carseat to the forward facing position in my 2006 Mercury Mountaineer. We have leather seats (have car seat protector down and I installed the car seat in the middle position (bifold split bench - splits 3/4 of the way). It tilted a little in the rear facing but seems to be doing more so now. I have it as tight as possible and now all sides are touching down, etc. However, it still tilts toward the side where the seat belt is. I don't know if it's b/c of the seatbelt or the tether, which is angled a little toward that side too b/c of the way the seat is made on the back. I don't know whether this tilt is ok or if I should put on the outside seat? Thoughts, suggestions, anything?!
Thanks so much!

Is it installed with LATCH or seatbelt? If it's installed with a lap/shoulder belt, using a locking clip instead of locking the seat belt may reduce the tilt. Look in your car seat manual for instructions on how to install with the locking clip. There should be a locking clip attached to the underside of your car seat.
Do you have LATCH in your car? Using LATCH instead of the seat belt should reduce the tilt also.
Make sure you get a good install BEFORE you attach the top tether.

If I have the latch system on the the outer two seats is it safer to put the car seat there with latches than in the middle with the tilt b/c of the seatbelt?

no. Evenflo does not allow borrowing the outboard anchors. You can only use LATCH if there is a dedicated set of lower anchors for that position.
First, i would take out the seat protector. They can interfere with getting a good install. It's not crash tested with your seat and may cause it to slip in a crash. Really, your seats will be fine. I assure you none of the dents will be permanent. :)
Try getting the lap portion of the belt as tight as you can so that the seat moves less than 1" in any direction at the beltpath before you lock the shoulder belt. Just let it retract naturally and don't force any additional webbing into the retractor. Locking it as the very last step will often help alleviate the tipping.
Like a pp mentioned, make sure you have an acceptable install before you tighten the tether. It only needs to be taut so there is no slack- not so tight that it's pulling the seat to the side.

Generally, if it's a solid install (less than one inch of movement side to side and front to back when pulled at the belt path), a slight tilt isn't a concern. Is the seatbelt pulling tighter over time, causing the tilt to worsen?
When you install the seat and pull the seatbelt tight, are you pulling on the shoulderbelt portion up near the retractor, or right next to the belt path? With locking retractors that cause a seat to tip, before moving it outboard, try this method: position the carseat properly, thread the seatbelt through the belt path, buckle it up, kneel or press down on the carseat as you pull all the slack out of the seatbelt by pulling on the shoulderbelt portion next to the belt path, pulling parallel to the lap portion of the belt/parallel to the vehicle seat. Then carefully lock the belt by pulling the shoulderbelt all the way out of the retractor and letting it feed back in, being careful not to pull UP on the shoulderbelt (which will cause the tipping). When the shoulderbelt gets taut, give it one or two more tugs down by the belt path, again parallel to the lapbelt, not pulling up, letting it carefully feed back into the retractor one or two more clicks, if possible. That usually helps eliminate tipping.
If nothing works, by all means, move it outboard and install with either LATCH or seatbelt, whichever gets a better install. I also highly recommend visiting a CPST, they might be able to show you a trick or two in person that will work. You can check to see if there is a Car-Seat.org technician in your area here (http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?p=574704#post574704), or visit the Safe Kids CPS certification website (https://ssl13.cyzap.net/dzapps/dbzap.bin/apps/assess/webmembers/tool?pToolCode=TAB9&pCategory1=TAB9_CERTSEARCH&Webid=SAFEKIDSCERTSQL) to search for a tech near you.

just to ease you mind i had the original evenflo triumph and had no problems with the base leaving a mark on my seats(cloth or leather) or anything spilling onto them. i now have the advance and once again it is leaving no marks on my seat. remove your seat protector and then reinstall the carseat.
also you asked if it was safer outboard with latch then middle tilting with seatbelt install. try your locking clip and see if the tilt goes away. i have found for me it is harder to get a tight install with that seat with the latch then it is with a seatbelt. also if you do try the latch make sure to check that they are comign from the correct slots for ff.

I'll definitely try taking the seat protector off, I'm not really worried about my seat as long as he's safe! I'll try the locking clip too if I can figure it out! Thanks again!
