anyone know what the expiration date on a 9/2001 cosco alpha omega is? i can't find the manual and it's not stamped on the back. i thought it was expired, but i think i read somewhere that it's 8 years not 6?? anyone know? i just love this seat, and haven't been able to destroy it yet.

I think that it should be a 8 year expy. However I would call Cosco just to be sure since it was not stamped on the seat!

I am sorry to be nosy, but I thought that Gage was your only one. Is the seat a hand me down from family or is it from an older child? Sorry...Just had to ask!

i actually bought the seat in 2003, not knowing about expiration dates back then, only b/c it was black leather and matched my interior. i have 2 neices and 2 nephews. one of my neices lived with me (until i got divorced) this is were my carseat obsession started 10 years ago, as she just turned 11 . i would go to pick her up from daycare and her mom would forget to leave her seat. i had to drive with an 18 month old wondering around my backseat b/c of course she wouldn't stay put in just a seatbelt! i ended up buying my 1st carseat for her in 1997. it was a cocso tourvia, then i got a shielded cosco booster, evenflo medallion, evenflo express, cocso alpha omega, lol the list goes on and on! i learned alot since then and have turned into a carseat nut! i now have um.....14 seats(9 of which are britax) for my ds, DN(11), DN1(7) DN2(5) and DN3(2).

I'm not sure what year Cosco moved from 6yrs to 8yrs, but I know for certain that in 2001 it was still 6yrs because in 2003 it was still 6yrs.

So sorry to say, your seat is expired.

:crying::crying: that's what i thought, but i wanted to make sure. i haven't used it in over 2 years b/c i tought it was expired then. but, then i read somewhere that they had a 8 year, and thought let me find out just in case!

ok, i called cosco today. they told me that my seat had an 8 year expiration! i asked her if she was sure that mine was 8 years not 6. she explained to me that b/c of the model # it was 8 years. i told her that it was not specified in the manual or on the seat. she assured me that is was 8. so i called back to talk to someone else to see if i'd get the same answer and i did. they both told me the same thing. :shrug-shoulders:

carseats USED to have longer life spans. It was more recent that they cut years off so yes an older seat would have a longer life span than a newer one, generally speaking, though I think we are now seeing a new upwards shift with the britax 9 yr stuff and the nauti 9 year as a backless booster and radian longer life span.

This isn't necessarily the case - the older seats simply didn't have a given expiry date by companies. Like I said, I saw a 2003 seat recently and it most definitely had a 6yr expiry stamped on it. So it was 6yrs for awhile, and then was raised to 8yrs. (There could be some 7yr in the middle there, but I'm not positive on that.)

I think that the case is manufacturers weren't specifying but government agencies stated 10yrs to keep super old seats out of circulation - and then when manufacturers realized it was an issue, most used 6yrs. Then they started extending them - in the case of the AO they extended to 8yrs so that they could stand by their claim of "only seat you'll ever need."

I think the upward trend we're seeing with some other seats is due to the materials they're using - like the radian has a steel frame. It could also be confidence in less parts to get lost, or maybe there is some other research that we just don't know about. :shrug-shoulders:

yes, that is the same model as the one i have. mine was manufactured in 2001 and has an 8 year, so your SIL's should be 8 as well. but if you can find out the model # and manufacture date you can call dorel/cosco to make sure.

Maybe it's a different between Canada and the US thing then?

I know 100% for sure that this 2003 seat was 6yrs, so maybe they didn't stamp them all with the same expiry date. Strange whatever the case may be. And even more confusing - means parents who don't have the expiry on the shell can really only call Dorel since there's not a specific time period from when they changed from one to the other.

OTOH, maybe this seat I saw was just a case of wrong expiry date marked on the shell.

i thought the same thing as you! which is why i thought my was expired in the first place. i was still unsure when i called and talked to the 1st lady, so i called back just to make sure i'd get the same answer.

The book for my 2001 Alpha Omega says in the back that it is warrantied for 7years but nothing about expiration.
It couldn't expire at 6 years though, if it was warrantied for 7! :D

This is what my 2001 AO said. I disposed if it last year, though.

My 2001 and 2004 AO's both say 7 year warranty in the manuals, but have absolutely nothing stamped on the seat shell. I've assumed they have 7-year expiration. My seats look like the photo Ginny4 posted. So, according to what Dorel told the OP, maybe mine also have an 8-year life.... I think I'll stick with 7 though; I was actually sort of glad when the 2001 seat expired (or so I thought) in June of this year, so I could retire it in good conscience. Even if it's good for another year, we don't really have any use for it at the moment, so it can continue quietly expiring for another year down in the basement, LOL.
