It got moved to the Community Member Chat forum, which you don't have access to yet.

I read the thread. Great buy!!!!!

What's a CL post? I know I'm not allowed in that forum (as one of my posts got moved there recently too), but I will be in a day or 2 I think.

What are reputation points, and how do you get them? How do you know how many you have?

I think I read everything. I read the welcome and the stickies in the forums (the 2 I go in), and still didn't see anything about what reputation points are, and how to get them, and how to know how many you have. All I know is I need 10 to access a certain forum (as well as 10 posts and 30 days of membership). Am I missing it?

THis is sooo frustrating!:mad::mad: I posted something yesterday (or the day before?). It was moved, and now I can't even see replies to my own post because it was put somewhere I don't have access. I've almost been a member for the required 30 days, and have over 10 posts. But I don't have any reputation points. I did a little search (because it didn't seem to be listed in the welcome pages) and finally found what the RP are. But mine seem to be turned off it says. Or is that because it's me looking at them?

 I guess I'm not helpful enough to be allowed on the "inside" of this group.

I wouldn't worry too much about rep. It just takes time. Many debates have been had about the value of the rep system, but it seems to work for this forum. Just keep posting and you'll get some.

I'm sorry you're feeling upset. Popularity has nothing to do with it. Next to & under each forum/subforum title are descriptions. Example:General
Community Member Coffee Break
Introductions, Off-topic Chat, Parenting, Personal/Private topics, Craigslist/Ebay.

That is the only area of the forum for CL threads. We do not have CL in the public area in part because Google caches the threads. There is a designated area for arranging swaps here and a designated area for talking about other people's sales. In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't take that much time to gain access to that area. Or you can use the chat room in the bar at the top of the screen.

Did you visit the Announcements subforum? Admin's announcements are lengthy, so you've got to patiently weed through them, but it's all there. THIS (http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=30964) is there & also linked to within the Welcome Announcement. It details the repuation system, etc. Don't forget the Search option, too, when looking for something :)

There's not really an "inside" of this group. Anyone can earn rep points for posts that are insightful, or well-thought out,or unique, etc.

But first you have to turn your reputation points on. ;) Click CP and then go to the "options" option, then check "display my reputation level" or something like that.

I guess from now on I'll avoid conversation type posts and just post when I have a question. Or on the rare occasion that I can help someone. Then I won't have to worry about my posts being moved and not being able to read replies to my OWN POSTS. I can't edit the post, I can't delete the post. I can't do anything.

 I don't know why I let this site get to me so much

Maybe it's just me but it seems like y'all are not being as helpful as usual. She has read everything and is simply asking a question about where to find her rep points and no one seems to answer her.

I will.

Click on User CP and then you will see your latest rep points and over on the right it will tell you the total you have.

I can totally understand your frustration about the thread. I know it's the rules but it does seem somewhat silly to move a thread somewhere were the OP can't read the replies to it. What's the point? Might as well delete that thread b/c it won't do the OP any good. :twocents:

Edit: I posted at the same time as a couple others who did seem to help answer the question. And, I disagree about rep points. I NEVER get any and I think I'm quite active. But-I don't usually respond to questions I think best answered by techs, etc. and I guess I'm not unique! LOL Oh well. I've had the same number of points FOREVER so I think that yes, it IS hard to get rep points. Again, just my opinion.

If someone had answered my question to begin with, that would have been very helpful and could have avoided my frustration level ;)Please realize that most of us are used to forums like this & in all such forums UserCP is the place where all such things are accessed. Please also try to remember basic ettiquette of owning your own frustration. No one attacked you. All the rules are plainly laid out & we've been trying to help you weed through them.

I am sorry it hasn't been easier & I hope I don't seem mean. I don't intend to.

Reputation can be given and does accumulate even if reputation is disabled in the control panel. All disabling does is makes it so your square stays black instead of green. For example, if I disabled my reputation, you wouldn't see a number of green boxes, you would see one black one. People could still give me rep, my points would still accumulate, and any parts of the forums that are regulated in part by # of rep points I would gain access to accordingly.

 I don't know why I let this site get to me so much

There's no reason to avoid conversation type posts. Threads are only moved when they're posted in the wrong forum. Moderators have to apply the rules as evenly as possible, and we often don't have the time to check whether or not someone will be able to view the thread once it's moved. If you'd like your thread deleted since you can't see it, you can always PM a mod or admin and request that it be deleted.

Just because you don't get reputation for a particular post, doesn't mean that that post wasn't helpful to somebody, or that you didn't contribute in some way. As the reputation system has evolved, people have moved to giving reputation for mainly posts that stand out above and beyond the others or offer a unique (and safe,) solution. I can tell you that for the # of posts I have, probably less than 1% of them have gotten rep. That doesn't mean that none of the rest have been helpful, it just means that I haven't gotten rep for them. Try not to focus on it. Post on threads that you want to and if right now those are all conversational in nature, there's nothing wrong with that.

Don't stress the rep thing. 10 points can be just 1 person sometimes, and sometimes 1 post generates rep from multiple people. Help where you can and enjoy yourself and eventually you'll get the rep you want.

And since you found CaseyRN's advice to be helpful, you may want to reciprocate the helpfulness by clicking on the scales icon in the upper right corner of the post box next to the post number to add to her reputation--kind of a "pat on the back."

I'm sorry you found the rules so confusing and frustrating. The forums have become so large and fast-moving that we have to rely on users reading the announcements and helping each other learn the rules. We're constantly re-evaluating the announcements and rules to make sure everyone's experience here is a pleasant one :).

I see rep as a funny thing...and also a fun thing. Do people ALWAYS get rep when they deserve it? Heck, no! I've written dozens of posts that I thought were rep-worthy but have gotten none. But then I have also written posts that surprisingly got rep. I think it's a neat system--just don't take it too seriously.

I am a member of another forum where there is a thank you button, but it doesn't give rep. It just gives thank you's. I don't get more thank you's there than I do rep here. In fact I think I have more rep.

I'm not sure how you would know that no one leaves anyone rep? I've given rep to 5 people today alone, I also just went to look and I've gotten rep 5 times today as well....and I am not big on the rep system. I couldn't care less if I get it or not. That's not why I'm here.

It is a message board, not a popularity contest. The rules for getting into the community areas are there for security reasons. To prevent trolls or those who are not going to stick around, from getting in easily.

The moderators do the best they can, they are never going to make everyone happy. :twocents:

Ideally, if you are a newer member and post something that belongs in a forum where you don't have access, you should get a note from the moderator who moved it explaining. Sometimes we forget, though. Sorry!

I'm pretty sure the only people who can see who left feedback are those who are sponsors (I believe the cost of sponsorship is fairly minimal). Otherwise, it's best to leave your name along with a brief comment in the little box that pops up when you click to leave someone feedback. I usually leave a comment like "That's a great idea. Thanks for helping the OP. - BookMama :) "

If it makes you feel any better you have about the same percentage of rep as I do.

I have 440 rep.

I have 3,032 posts.

You have 47 posts and 5 rep.

I didn't get rep until I'd been here for like a year or so.

rep is just a security measure, along with a good way to recognize something someone posts that is just perfect for the topic or just really impresses.

I wouldn't worry about it... the only time I ever did was the first time I really wanted to give some and i couldn't remember how... lol.
