Both Britax and SSK seats can touch the front seats, as long as the vehicle allows. Some do not because it can interfere with advanced airbags. and touching means just that- they shouldn't be crammed against the front seats.

It's in the mnaual for the seat that it's OK -as long as the vehicle allows it. You could just find the page and show the store clerk.
It is NOT OK for most seats though - so unless the clerk had read the Britax manuals - she really may just not have known. One of the resons seats are used incorrectly so often is that each seat ahs it's own set of do and dont's - so correct useage is not cut and dry.

do you have a reference for where to find that in the Britax manuals? I've not come across yet. I thought it was just not expressly forbidden and understood that it was okay- which has been confirmed by Brtiax.
I believe the seats that don't allow it are actually rare- some Evenflos come to mind.

Yes, Evenflo infant seats are the only seats that don't allow touching the seatback in front, I think no other manual even addresses it (Britax doesn't specifically recommend it, though it's often confusing that www.cpsafety.com (http://www.cpsafety.com) uses a Britax in it's 'braced and tethered' section). In theory it's a safety feature for it to touch (it would help prevent downward rotation and reduce the risk of injury), but in practice it's your car manual that needs to be obeyed: If you have advanced airbags they need to have nothing pushing against the seatback or it could disable the airbag and increase injury risk for a front passenger.

I thought it was OK to have the seat "braced" by the front seat as long as the install was tight before the "bracing" happened.
Once my seat is installed, I push the front seat so that its snug against the Marathon. Is that not OK?

It's ok as long as your vehicle manual (in the airbag section, probably) doesn't prohibit it. When you do that in some cars the 'airbag off' light actually comes on to warn you that you're doing something wrong.

OK, got it. Our car is older, 2001, so we are good on the airbag front, no fancy shmancy airbags in that car. Thanks Jools!
