Our pastor's just gave us their old car, an 87 taurus, and now i need to know where to put tether anchors. I refuse to pay ford to do it for me, I have big problems with them. so who has one, and can tell me where to put the anchors?

My mom has a 98 Taurus and the TA came in a kit with instructions that we installed.

You will have to get the tether anchors from a Ford dealer, but they should come with instructions.

Wait, you're in Canada. Are car manufacturers required to install the anchors for free since tether anchors are required in Canada?

I moved this so you can get more help... the US really does have quite different rules about anchors, and there're no part numbers for pre 1989 vehicles (generic should be used, you'll have to drill holes, the LATCH manual says the car manual has instructions)

Good luck!

IIRC, Ford installs tether anchors free of charge :twocents: .

Yep, I'm pretty sure Ford does it for free as well. Otherwise you're going to have to get your hands on a copy of the vehicle manual if it's missing. Assuming that the older Ford's have the deeper area in the middle seating position the way the mid 90 Ford's do, a standard TA kit won't work in the middle seating position. I think they will in the outboard positions though. Standard kits are available at TRU and some stores online - I think Sears may have them too. I would double check the length of the anchor needed first though as it's possible you'll have to get all 3 special order from Ford.

Ford should definitely do ONE anchor free of charge, and maybe more.. It may require calling more than one dealership, though.

Tether anchor points were not required under CMVSS 210.1 until 1989 (september 01). If it's a station wagon, I'll have to do more research. I'll have to check the books from Transport Canada that I have at the office. As the vehicle is over 10 years old, the dealer probably won't put the bolt in for you - they may be worried about liabilities due to possible vehicle condition. I'll check back in the morning and let you know what's happening.

In my experience with Ford for both LATCH and TAs, they implemented a good 2-3 years prior to the deadline in many vehicles. (eg. Ford Windstar, '99, LATCH--imagine my surprise!)... My neighbour has a '88 Mercury Sable and was able to get two TAs put in for free.

I think you might have to call different dealerships. Some might not want to do it for an older vehicle as 1987 and some might think they can charge you. At the most, you might have to pay for the anchor itself which is about $10-15 and the installation would be free if it's to a pre-drilled hole and takes no more than 5-10 minutes. If it's one of those jobs where it would take at least 30 min to find a sound location on the frame of the vehicle to drill and attach the anchor, they would want to charge you for the labour.

OK - tether points in the 87 Taurus. If it's a 4 door sedan there are holes that can accommodate a tether bolt in the left rear and the right rear - nothing in the centre. If it's a 4 door wagon then there are anchor plates provided making installation possible. The information comes from a TC publication entitled Tether Anchorages for Child Restraints in 1987 Canadian Passenger Vehicles, TP7678. Hope that helps.:)

I had a tether anchor installed in an 89 Thunderbird about 4 years ago. I just had to call the Ford dealership and tell them what I needed done and they gave me an appointment. When I arrived they asked how many I needed and where I would like them installed. I only had 1 child at the time so I requested one in the middle. Once they took the car in, I was out in less than 15 minutes. They gave me a receipt and they were billing Ford Canada $90 for parts and labour.

thank you very much. After my experience trying to get GM to put one on our Cavalier, and having insane problems with ford ripping us off in the past, I'd much rather do it myself, knowing there are predrilled holes, I now just have to buy the anchors and put them in. Thank you.

I had issues with my local ford service center until I called Ford who sent me the document telling them they had to put anchors in my car for free. (They originally told me it wasn't possible and my car is only a '94.)

Yup, there's a service bulletin that Ford corporate will reimburse the dealerships for anchor installs.. I think they're only required to do one though?

They did all 3 for me. The document thing did not state a minimum on anchors.
