I have desperately been trying to find any type of review on the rear-facing third seat of a station wagon. Are they safe? If so, for what weights/heights? Is a special car seat required in this location?
I would appreciate any help!

Newer rear facing seats vary by model. The Volvo rear seats have specific weight limits for older children that are not using boosters. In general, you cannot install a carseat or booster in a rear-facing seat.
This is not necessarily a problem, since if your child is within the manufacturer's weight limits, they will be very well protected in a frontal crash.
If you are buying a newer wagon, you will have to consult a dealer to see an owner's manual for specifics. If it is an older wagon, you may need to contact the manufacturer to see if children should be seated there at all.

Hello. We have a 95 ford taurus. The owners manual has a specific section on the rear 3rd seat and states specifically that no kid in any RESTRAINT (other than seatbelts around age  be placed in these seats
Hope this helps
