I was just curious about the handle on infant seats. I have a Graco Snugride, and it states in the instructions that I can leave the handle up in the vehicle. But I know that other seats do not allow it. Is it ok to do so? Thank you.

Check your manual; some seats allow it to be up, some do not. If your seat allows it to be up, then you may leave it up.

I had a Graco snugride and now a Graco SS1 and both allowed the handle to be up as stated in the manual.

:yeahthat:
In addition, there is one seat that has been available in Canada that the handle HAD to be left up in the car. So it's always important to use whatever handle position(s) are allowed by the manufacturer & refer to the manual to know which one(s) are allowed or mandatory.
In the case of the Snugride, yes, if your manual states it can be left up, it can be left up. A word of caution, position C is not allowed when travelling in the vehicle, and it's in a deceiving location that rests right around the top edge of the shell. So the handle has to be all the way up, or else position D or E - both of which are well below the top of the shell.

The allowability of the upright handle position is not retroactive to older SnugRides, though, is it?

As far as I know, if the manual doesn't allow it, it's not allowed. You'd have to call Graco with your model #, serial #, and DOM to find out for sure, but I wouldn't do it without either an OK from them (with them knowing the age of your snugride,) or the manual allowing it.

No, it isn't, but the SRs that do not allow it are getting very close to expiration so you'll want to check your date of manufacture. You have six years from the date the seat was made.

not to hijack but.....
I have a SS1, I usually have it with the handle right around the back at the head level, is this position ok? (yes I'll check the manual but I'm a bit slow when it comes to those darn things)
Thanks, Morgan.

Yes, that position in the SS1 is 100% fine. The SS1 has 4 positions, A,B,C, and D. A is all the way up. All the positions are allowed except position B. Position B is up above the shell between A and C, so as long as the handle is all the way up or else back at the edge of the shell, it's fine.
(Anyone have any clue why C isn't allowed in the Snugride anyways? It seems to me like it's right along the edge of the shell, so I've never completely understood that. )

Hm, I have heard that the handle position on the older snugrides was retroactive. I think it was in a CPS Express. I will see if I can dig that up.

I don't think so, they actually changed the handle when they finally allowed it to be up.
