I would make sure to weigh him at least once a month. He could stay 31lbs for a while or gain weight quickly, and unfortunately there's no reliable way to predict what will happen.

Just a side note here, I weigh at the post office and vets since you get a much more reliable digital read out. Yeah the post office lady thinks I'm crazy but she never tells me no. And yes the cats see the vet more then my kids see the dr;)

Since kids grow at different rates, it could happen very quickly or it may take a long time. My dd was 25 at 2 years old and at 3 years old was 29. I recommend weighing at least monthly as well just in case he has a growth spurt.

Like others it depends. My third was 28 lbs at 2 years and was 34 lbs at 2 years 4 months so I turned him. He then lost weight (he might have had mono, not sure I didn't want to have his blood drawn) so I turned him back rear-facing. He stayed rear-facing until 2 years 9 months when I turned him forward facing again. He was aroudn 31lbs but I was 8 months preg and I wanted to be ready for Elizabeth. I had captian's chairs and it would have been hard to have two rear-facing seats with my captain's chairs and I wanted the seats in right in case I ended up with another c-section.

My dd was 33#s at 2y 7m and wasn't 35#s until almost a year later. If only the 35# marathons were out then!
My boys only gained about 2#s from 4 to 5. We'll see if my dd does the same;)
